The "Kretzer" is South Tyrol's most traditional rosé. It is produced on calcareous clay soils between 260 and 380 metres above sea level from the autochthonous king grape variety par excellence. The name Kretzer comes from the medieval vinification process – the "Kretze", a woven wicker basket, was once used to separate must and berry skins. This historic rosé wine tradition is continued today using state-of-the-art cellar technology: The Lagrein grapes undergo traditional rosé vinification at a controlled temperature in stainless steel, where brief contact with the skins gives the wine its characteristic salmon red colour.

“Andrius” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2023
Andrius. Here, where in 1893 courageous winegrowers laid the first foundation stone of South Tyrolean co-operative history, a Sauvignon Blanc of rare strength and elegance is still produced today. The vines thrive on the calcareous slopes between 260 and 380 metres, where dolomite rock and Andrian porphyry characterise the terroir like two old friends who complement each other. It is the Mediterranean climate that shows its cooler side up here. Temperatures drop at night, allowing the vines to breathe. During the day, the South Tyrolean sun warms the stony soils – an interplay that gives the Sauvignon Bianco that special tension that characterises great wines. In the hands of cellar master Rudi Kofler, selected grapes from the oldest vineyards are turned into a wine of remarkable depth. Six months on the fine lees. Eighty per cent in stainless steel for freshness, twenty per cent in large wooden barrels for structure.

“Doran” Chardonnay Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2022
Doran is no coincidence. It shows what happens when French Chardonnay clones meet South Tyrolean limestone soils. The Andrian winery takes exactly the time it needs for this Riserva: twelve months in tonneaux, 30% of which in new French barrels. This is the Burgundy school in its purest form. The grapes come from the highest vineyards around Andrian, between 350 and 450 metres above sea level. This is where the calcareous clay soil is interspersed with white dolomite rock. The microclimate makes all the difference: cooler temperatures than elsewhere, longer ripening time, more acidity. Perfect for a Chardonnay with high standards. Cellar master Rudi Kofler favours full fermentation in wood. Regular batonnage ensures that the wood is elegantly integrated and never becomes dominant. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for a further three months in stainless steel – for a final balance between opulence and freshness.

“Juvelo” Gewürztraminer Passito Alto Adige DOC 2023 dolce
Juvelo is the crown jewel of Andrian. A wine that only comes into being when nature plays its part. December in South Tyrol – while others have long since harvested their grapes, here a few Gewürztraminer vines are still waiting for the perfect moment. The grapes hang on the vine until they are clearly covered in noble mould. Botrytis cinerea, the "noble rot", perforates the grape skin and allows the water to evaporate. What remains is pure concentration. The harvest are picked by hand, berry by berry. There is no rush. The grapes are gently pressed, then fermentation begins in small oak barrels. This is followed by 11 months of ageing in barriques, time that this wine needs to develop its complexity.

“Anrar” Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2022
Anrar is the answer to a simple question: what happens when South Tyrol's second most important red grape variety is given time in wood? While the classic Pinot Nero retains its freshness in stainless steel, Anrar takes a different approach. Approx. 12 months in French barriques for malolactic fermentation and further ageing. No wood show, but elegant integration. That makes the difference. But not alone: the best Pinot Nero vineyards around Andriano provide the grapes. Altitudes between 350 and 450 metres, where the calcareous clay soils are interspersed with dolomite rock. The cooler microclimate ensures slow ripening, more acidity and finer tannins. Perfect for a Pinot Nero with Burgundian ambitions.

“Gant” Merlot Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2022
Gant stands for greatness. This Merlot Riserva has been the flagship of Andrian for years. A wine that shows what this international grape variety can achieve at high altitudes in South Tyrol. While Merlot is often too lush elsewhere, here, between 250 and 300 metres above the Adige Valley, it finds its elegant side. The sites are perfectly chosen: Medium-heavy, sandy loam soil ensures good drainage and prevents the Merlot from becoming too fat. The cooler microclimate slows down the ripening process, maintains the acidity and ensures finer tannins. Exactly what this grape variety needs to develop character rather than just vigour. The vinification follows classic rules: Mash fermentation in stainless steel with gentle movement of the mash. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is transferred to barriques for malolactic fermentation and further ageing. The wood integrates elegantly, providing structure without dominating. Time and patience are two of the secrets of Gant.

A new era began for the Andrian Winery in 2008. Administratively, it has been part of the Cantina Terlanoinery ever since, but the Andrian brand and its wines are now better known and more independent than ever. At the end of the 19th century, the winegrowers of the dreamy village of Andrian, situated on the right bank of the Adige River at an altitude of 285 metres, joined forces to form South Tyrol's first cooperative winery. With great diligence and flair, the 60 members constantly work on a wine quality that can hold its own in modern times. After the merger with Cantina Terlano, which is located on the left bank of the Etsch River, the profile of the cooperative was newly sharpened. The sales regions were considerably expanded. Especially in Italy and in the USA, the level of awareness of the Andrian winery, long predominantly popular in Germany, has risen significantly.
The mostly east and south-facing vines grow on clayey limestone soils interspersed with angular white dolomite rock. The loose composition of the subsoil ensures a balanced water balance, good aeration and deep rooting. The climate in the central Adige Valley is Mediterranean. The vines enjoy particularly many hours of sunshine. On the gentle eastern slopes at an altitude of 260 to 340 metres, especially late-ripening grape varieties are pampered by the sun.
After the alliance with Terlan, the second oldest winery in South Tyrol, the number of Andrian wines was thinned out. The house's drops are vinified into two lines, depending on the grape material and processing method. The classic selection of ten individual DOC wines with a terroir-emphasised character is prominently complemented by six selection wines true to the variety, which come from older vines whose yields are kept extremely low. The selections, which mature in the extended cellar partly in small oak barrels and partly in stainless steel, impress with their balanced acidity, powerful elegance, freshness and complexity. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Lagrein and Pinot Blanc are most strongly represented in the vine portfolio, with roughly equal shares.
According to the management, white wines account for 64 percent and red wines for 36 percent of the total production in the newly structured Andrian winery. In the meantime, the cooperative, which also has many years of expertise in reds, has its first Pinot Noirs in its range. SUPERIORE.DE
"The leap in quality is remarkable and the wines are really something to behold. A classic is the Lagrein Tor di Lupo, which was one of the first premium Lagrein in the country at the end of the 1980s. The Andrian sites are obviously also very suitable for Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. A novelty is the Pinot Noir Anrar, which is only available in very limited quantities." Falstaff
