“Pietranera” Rosso Toscana IGT 2023
Pietra nera – black stone. This is the name of the introduction to the world of Piaggia, the small winery in Carmignano founded by Mauro Vannucci in the 1970s and now run by his daughter Silvia. Carmignano, the forgotten DOCG at the gates of Florence, where Cabernet has been permitted in blends since the Medici era – centuries before the Super Tuscans were invented. Pietranera shows this tradition in small format: 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Franc. Fermented with natural yeasts, eighteen to twenty days on the skins, then only three months in used barriques – just enough to smooth the edges, not enough to let the wood taste.

“Il Sasso” Carmignano DOCG 2022
Carmignano is Italy's best-kept secret: a DOCG of just 110 hectares – smaller than some Bordeaux châteaux. It was here, just outside Florence, that Caterina de' Medici brought Cabernet vines from France in the 16th century. While the rest of Tuscany invented the Super Tuscans centuries later, Carmignano had long since reached its goal. Il Sasso comes from the cru of the same name in Santa Cristina a Mezzana: two and a half hectares, thirty-year-old vines, clay and galestro at an altitude of 250 metres. Seventy per cent Sangiovese, plus Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc – the classic Carmignano formula in Silvia Vannucci's signature style. Fermented with natural yeasts, almost three weeks on the skins, then twelve months in used French barriques – no new wood, nothing should distract from the terroir. Bottled unfiltered and matured in the bottle for a further six months.

“Piaggia” Carmignano Riserva DOCG 2021
Piaggia Riserva is pure elegance in a bottle: clear ruby red colour, almost impenetrable, very consistent. Raspberry compote, dried orange peel, roses, exotic spices and a hint of cocoa on the broodingbouquet. Silky and refined on the palate, with notes of violets, ripe red and black fruits in rapid succession. Its lively acidity retains exceptional finesse, although the primary fruit slowly asserts itself. Finishes long with a layer of sweet tannins and balsamic cherry flavours. Its finesse and balance are already astonishing at a young age, and the best will only come in a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Poggio de' Colli" Cabernet Franc Toscana IGT 2021]()
“Poggio de' Colli” Cabernet Franc Toscana IGT 2021
The dark, seductive Cabernet Franc Poggio de' Colli takes its time in the glass and slowly awakens with a blend of redcurrants, peppery roses, exotic curries and a slight hint of musk that lends it gravitas. Velvety soft yet refined. Aristocratic and cool on the palate, with a powerful wave of tart raspberry fruit that feeds the palate with savoury spices and mineral notes. Leaves a layer of fine tannins and a hint of berry concentration on the final, which tapers off savoury, long and perfectly balanced. A radiant wine that will only reveal its full beauty in a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Uva dei Colombi" Carmignano Riserva DOCG 2019]()
“Uva dei Colombi” Carmignano Riserva DOCG 2019
Uva dei Colombi – the grape of the doves. A name like a poem, for a wine that epitomises everything that Piaggia stands for. And what Carmignano can be when no compromises are made. The grapes come from the founding vineyard: the plot in Poggio a Caiano that Mauro Vannucci planted in 1972 when he built his house here and saw the slopes above. He was convinced that this exposure, this soil – clay and galestro, permeable and calcareous – was destined for great wines. Fifty years later, the vines prove him right. 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot. Each variety is harvested separately, fermented separately – with natural yeasts, eighteen to twenty-eight days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation already takes place in the barriques: one hundred per cent new French oak, for thirty-six months. Then a further twelve months of bottle ageing before the wine leaves the winery. Only around a thousand bottles are produced in each vintage.

Anyone who believes that Sassicaia and Tignanello were the first Supertuscan wines does not know the history of Carmignano. The wine-growing region of the same name in the province of Prato is one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Italy and is located in the north-easternmost part of Tuscany. Great blends of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc have been produced here since the introduction of French grape varieties by the noble De Medici family in the 16th century.
Alongside Tenuta di Capezzana, Silvia Vannucci's Piaggia winery in the village of Poggio a Caiano is undoubtedly one of the top producers in this small wine region of just under 200 hectares. The talented winemaker took over the business in 2007 from her father Mauro, who acquired the estate in the 1970s. Inspired by the potential of Carmignano wines, the Vanucci family focussed on quality and acquired some of the best vineyards in the region.
Today, the sustainably farmed estate covers a total of 25 hectares of vineyards, from which you can enjoy a marvellous view over the city of Florence. The vines lie at an altitude of 50 to 300 metres in the immediate vicinity of the village of Carmignano. Protected by the Apennines and the Montalbano hill, this growing area has an ideal climate in which both Sangiovese and French grape varieties thrive.
The Vannucci family owes Piaggia's current success in part to its long-standing collaboration with OenologistEmiliano Falsini and consultant Alberto Antonini. For the well-coordinated team, sustainable work in the vineyard is a top priority, which is why the vines are pruned and harvested by hand every year in a time-consuming process.
Fermentation in the renovated wine cellar takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks before the wines are transferred to wooden barrels for a longer maturation period. In this respect, the winery has developed considerably under Silvia's management: The use of new oak wood has been increasingly reduced over the last 15 years, so that the matured red wines can now delight with a fine and incredibly soft tannin - without dominant wood notes.
The exciting wines from Piaggia emphasise the enormous potential of the growing area, which is confirmed every year by famous wine critics such as Antonio Galloni (Vinous.com). For us, Carmignano is by far the longest established Supertuscan and a real insider tip for wine lovers looking for intensity, balance and elegance in the glass. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Piaggia winery, along with Tenuta di Capezzana, is undoubtedly the beacon of the Carmignano area. As the region grows and producers continue to improve their practices (and ultimately their wines), Piaggia has been at the forefront for longer than I can remember. What's more, the wines here are getting better and better. Silvia Vannucci places great emphasis on defining the unique terroirs in the vineyards and steadily reducing the use of oak in the winery. These changes have boosted the purity and quality of the wines without losing the noble lustre that sets Piaggia apart from the competition. If I were forced to choose one producer in Carmignano to follow, it would be Piaggia." Vinous
