There are vintages that are underestimated on release and only assert their true status over the years. The 2009 Sassicaia is one of them. When it came onto the market, critics debated 2008 and 2010, but anyone who listened carefully realised that the 2009 climate year in Bolgheri was simply perfect. A long, cold winter secured the water reserves. The spring began cautiously, the summer gifted the vineyards with warmth and pronounced day-night temperature contrasts – conditions that lead Cabernet Sauvignon to extraordinary phenolic ripeness on the gravel soils of Bolgheri. The harvest began at the beginning of September and was flawless.
Deep ruby red, still young today. Blackberry, blackcurrant, espresso, rosemary and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose – intense, complex, finely balanced. The flavour is muscular and at the same time carried by an elegant juiciness, with fine-pored tannins and a finish that is designed to last for decades in the magnum bottle. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cabernet classic: engaging berry flavours, also notes of tobacco and chocolate, spicy notes; balanced and supple, occupies the palate with its juiciness, finishes long on notes of ripe red berries, leather and sweet vanilla. Successful and soft, already gives a lot of pleasure, but can also mature." Vinum
"Another marvellously lascivious bouquet, similar to the 2006, of hedonistic beauty. In other words, the broad and profoundly sensual bouquet combines ripe cherries, prunes and cassis with liquorice, leather, cocoa, pepper and a hint of balsamic, ethereal notes such as mint and menthol. On the palate, it displays all its power and elegance, this rarely successful balancing act. Without being fat, it simply condenses into a long, supple mouthfeel with a polished and sensual fullness that is supported by a precise and present acidity structure." Weinwisser
"Bright, intense ruby colour with violet shimmer. Very fine nose, showing notes of mint, dark cherry, raspberry, some plum, inviting. Smooth and compact on the palate, shows lots of fresh fruit, very juicy, wonderfully sweet melting flavour, raspberry and herbs on the final, lots of polished, well-integrated tannins." Falstaff
"Sassicaia has achieved amazing results in recent years, and the 2009 vintage opens with all the intensity and beauty one should expect from Italy's flagship Super Tuscan. Notes of blackberries, soft spices, chocolate, espresso and a hint of rosemary oil make for a beautiful bouquet. The mouthfeel is long, supple and rich." Wine Enthusiast
"Torrefied and caramel notes on the nose, a wine that vibrates with a beautiful crimson colour. The palate shows signs of a hot vintage, with hints of exotic fig, but laced with fresh, crushed violet notes. There's a sense of sun bleaching, although an intoxicating aroma of sweet spices takes over here too. This is charcoal grilled over a roasted blackcurrant Cabernet core. And then, just as you're wondering about the exoticism of the fruit, the sweet relief of fresh mint comes through on the finish. What a beautiful wine. Elegant, but with plenty of power." Decanter
"The 2009 Bolgheri Sassicaia showed marked concentration when it was first released and was widely regarded as one of the richest expressions in the modern history of the estate. Today, the wine is in a beautiful place, offering intense fruit with blackcurrant, tobacco and spicy notes that follow the classic Sassicaia blueprint but place more emphasis on volume and texture, a profile that invites comparison with the 2023 vintage. On the palate, the 2009 remains full and generous, but what sets it apart is the striking freshness of the vintage, which surpasses both the 2012 and 2011 in terms of energy and persistent vibrancy. This wine gets better every time I'm lucky enough to taste it." Wine Advocate
"Bright, full ruby red colour. Pure, perfumed aromas of blackberry, cassis, pencil, violet and mineral, complicated by a superripe note of crushed raspberry. Extremely primary and pure, offering sharply defined cassis, violet and mineral flavours of great class. The perfectly integrated acidity and lively, floral character of the Cabernet Franc give the mid palate plenty of lift. Although it has a very ripe flavour profile, this wine conveys a rare lightness that is typical of Sassicaia, but rare for this vintage on the Tuscan coast. It finishes with noble tannins and excellent length on the palate. Despite its creamy power and charm, I like the balance of this wine and the subtle communication of its complex flavours." Vinous
"A very rich and ripe wine with flavours of currants, cherries and balsamic vinegar. A hint of leather. It continues on the finish. Full-bodied, round and velvety tannins that are restrained and beautiful. Sweet and sour. Also savoury." James Suckling
