In 1959, Count Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita planted Perricone and Nero d'Avola on the San Lucio hill using the Alberello system – an investment in a future that hardly any Sicilian could have imagined at the time. In 1970, the first vintage was released: the first single-vineyard wine the island had ever produced. The 2012 vintage showcases the blend in its most complex form: 63% Nero d'Avola forms the foundation, complemented by 37% of other red varieties from the estate, including Perricone and small proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Traditional red wine fermentation in stainless steel, 20 days' contact with the skins, full malolactic fermentation, followed by 18 months in newLiters made from Allier and Tronçais oak.

A deep ruby red. On the nose: cardamom, vanilla, stewed plum and black liquorice. On the palate, it is opulent and sensual, with soft tannins and a long, sweet finish. A Rosso del Conte of generous, warm richness. SUPERIORE.DE

"An impenetrable, almost black purple. Leafy, dark fruit and a hint of tomato stalk and black olives. The faintest hint of oak. Ripe dark fruit that is still very young. Still a hint of malolactic fermentation and plenty of bittersweet tannins. Very long and full of character, with a hint of black olives and a rather elegant weight on the palate. Complex." "Bright red. Highly fragrant red cherry, spicy strawberry, violet and cinnamon on the almost aromatic, very floral nose. Ripe and supple, with a graceful mouthfeel and a long, clean, mineral finish that reveals lovely, recurring floral notes. "The highly regarded 2012 Sicilia Contea di Sclafani Rosso del Conte Tenuta Regaleali is a blend of 41% Nero d'Avola, 31% Perricone, with the remainder comprising a mix of various red grapes grown at the Regaleali estate. Interestingly, earlier vintages of this wine were made exclusively from Nero d'Avola, but the blend seems to have become more complex with each vintage. It is a great wine with powerful extraction and a long finish. In fact, this bottle should be laid down in the cellar for a few more years to allow the flavours to integrate better and become smoother. The finish offers notes of coffee, tar, liquorice, dried fruit, blackberry jam and much more. The Rosso del Conte displays profound complexity." Wine Advocate
