!["Anthìlia" Bianco Sicilia DOC 2024]()
“Anthìlia” Bianco Sicilia DOC 2024
Anthìlia is Donnafugata's "ancient white rock", named after the ancient town of Entella and a tribute to the roots of Contessa Entellina. Born as the first wine of the house, it is still a shining classic in the portfolio today. Pale yellow in colour with delicate greenish reflections. The nose reveals a lively basket of aromas of white peach and fine citrus notes, accompanied by fragrant wild flowers that combine lightness and freshness. Clear and juicy on the palate: pure fruit, a pleasant salty coolness and an elegant finish. Goes perfectly with raw fish, fried vegetables, vegetable tarts or mild cream cheese – a Mediterranean white wine that is an uncomplicated delight and enriches everyday life with style. SUPERIORE.DE

The grapes come from the hills of Contessa Entellina, where limestone-rich soils and high altitudes ensure freshness and aromatic complexity. Bright straw yellow in colour with golden reflections. The bouquet smells of white peach, candied lemon, herbs and some broom, underpinned by fine mineral notes. Structured and smooth on the palate, with clear fruit, fine flavour and well-integrated acidity. A well-balanced, pleasantly dry white wine with fine complexity – ideal with fish, white meat or Sicilian cuisine with a fresh herbal flavour. “Cultivar Biancolilla” Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva 2025
Donnafugata | Sicily
From the volcanic island of Pantelleria, where the wind dictates the rules: Here, the olive trees grow on terraces of black lava rock, pruned low to defy the relentless gusts. The Biancolilla – one of the oldest olive varieties in Sicily – finds its most poetic expression in this barren landscape between Africa and Europe. The olives are harvested by hand directly from the tree, early in the second decade of October, when the polyphenol content reaches its maximum. Immediate cold pressing and gramolatura in a controlled atmosphere preserve the exceptional fineness.

From wine to oil, from west to east: Donnafugata has been cultivating olive groves on the northern slope of Mount Etna since 2016 – where volcanic soils and extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night produce olives of particular intensity. The Nocellara Etnea is the defining variety of this region: large-fruited, juicy, with a favourable ratio of flesh to stone. For this single-variety oil, the olives are harvested by hand in the second half of November and immediately cold-pressed – gramolatura is carried out in a controlled atmosphere to prevent oxidation and preserve the flavours.

This olio comes from old olive groves in south-east Sicily, where the Tonda Iblea variety has been native for generations. After harvesting, it is cold-extracted immediately so that the vibrant flavour and powerful character of the variety remain unchanged in the bottle. There, the oil is a light green colour with a golden shimmer, as if the Sicilian sun is shining once again. The bouquet is fine and clear: green tomato, fresh grass and a subtle herbal flavour reminiscent of lemon thyme and young leaves. The flavour is harmonious, with a delicate bitterness, elegant, well-integrated spiciness and a juicy, green-fruity length.

This extremely delicate Moscato, which was christened Kabir (the Great) in Arabic so as not to be overshadowed by the far more powerful Ben Ryé, never fails to surprise and delight. Elegant and balanced, beguiling scents of melon and orange peel, aromatic balance, sweetness and freshness on the palate. A delight with intensely flavoured cheeses and shortbread with white fruits. “Chiarandà" Chardonnay Contessa Entellina Sicilia DOC 2022
Chiarandà is Donnafugata's great white solitaire, a Sicilian Chardonnay with an unmistakable format and clear terroir profile. The grapes come from selected plots around Contessa Entellina, at an altitude of around 350 to 400 metres. The Mediterranean climate is characterised by hot days and cool nights, while the clay and limestone soils offer the best conditions for ripeness with structure. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, selectively and early in the morning. One part of the wine is matured in stainless steel tanks, the other in French oak, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. The assemblage is followed by extended bottle ageing of at least two years – careful ageing with a view to longevity.

Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo only chose the name Donnafugata – the "woman on the run" from the famous novel "The Leopard" by the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa – in the 1980s. But the family has owned the vineyards since the 19th century. The Sicilian flagship business has long been run by the next generation, Antonio and José, who are passionate about culture, charity, sustainability and environmental awareness. The roles at the oldest winery on the Mediterranean island are clearly divided within the family: While Antonio is in charge of production, his sister José is responsible for controlling and marketing. Gabriella Favara is the granddaughter of the two founders. She completes the management team and is responsible for the export of Donnafugata wines and all communications. The company is thus perfectly equipped for the future, true to the maxim that, alongside tradition, innovation is always at the centre of the family winery.
Trend-setting decisions for viticulture in Sicily.
The Rallo family's brilliant entry into a market that was still at a standstill in the 1980s and dominated by a single brand gave Sicilian viticulture a groundbreaking boost. Giacomo Rallo's decision to invest not only in the Contessa Entellina headquarters in Marsala, but also in Pantelleria, was almost revolutionary. The much-praised natural sweet wines produced there still crown the adventure on the small island with its salty and calcareous soils with great success.
A wide variety of authentic Italian wines.
The impressive, well-organised range of wines produced in three extremely modern production facilities at the winery in western Sicily ranges from delicately fruity white wines made from indigenous and international varieties to fruity reds, fine sweet wines, a Spumante Brut and the red Mille e Una Notte, made almost entirely from the local Nero d'Avola variety. And the Zibibbo grapes, which come from a recultivated vineyard on Pantelleria that is more than a hundred years old and has rare vines with authentic roots, are the raw material for the world-famous sweet wine Ben Ryè. A speciality of the winery: the grapes are harvested at night. This saves energy and prevents unwanted fermentation during transport.
Elegant wines – also from the Etna region.
For some years now, under the management of Antonio Rallo, Donnafugata has also had its own vineyards on Etna. Nerello Mascalese is the main grape variety grown here. The wines from the volcano are characterised by elegance and finesse and mark another milestone in the history of the traditional Sicilian winery.
Artful wine labels and innovative technology are no contradiction here.
The decision to equip the winery with a photovoltaic system shortly after the turn of the millennium was a forward-looking one. Donnafugata now covers the majority of its energy requirements with solar power. The artistic labels for the wines, which are often inspired by literary masterpieces, are part of a convincing communication strategy: storytelling. A universal language that impressively translates the theme of wine and Sicily into a fantastic and feminine language. And the idea of combining music with fine wines came from José. The trained singer, who has already been heard and seen in New York, likes to combine a song with a delicious house wine during her performances. SUPERIORE.DE
"Year after year, Sicily's wine landscape produced wines with plenty of structure and alcohol. In 1983, Giacomo Rallo burst into this monotony with wines that were modern, well-made and pleasant to drink, heralding a new oenological era on the island. To this day, the labels have lost none of their initial elegance and approachable nature." Gambero Rosso
