Romano Dal Forno started out in 1983 with a proposition that he has proven every vintage since: a Valpolicella can compete with the greatest wines in the world. He learnt this from Giuseppe Quintarelli. He internalised it in the Val d'Illasi, where his vines grow on alluvial gravel and clay, at up to 450 metres, with a planting density that makes every yield a rarity. Valpolicella Superiore does not begin fermentation – it begins with six weeks of appassimento. Corvina, Corvinone, Croatina, Oseleta and Rondinella dry slowly in the air of the lodoletta, losing water and gaining soul. Then: controlled fermentation in steel tanks, 36 months in new French and American oak barriques, years of ageing in the bottle.
2019 is characterised by dense black cherries, dark chocolate, spiced biscuits and a hint of graphite in the glass. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a finish that would already pass for Amarone in other categories. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegant ruby red colour. Smells expressive and savoury on the nose, of rich cherries, pickled plums, subtle hints of freshly made marzipan, then red peach, coconut flakes, elegant precious wood. A creamy entry on the palate with an immediately juicy attack, savoury, clear, with still young wood, comes in many layers, long." Falstaff
"The 2019 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta is very rich in extract with deep black fruits and bitter spices. There is toasted caraway, road topping and baked plums. Its exaggerated full-bodied style is characterised by extreme concentration, tannins and distinct sweetness." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of dried black cherries, dried blueberries and blackberry liqueur introduce a palate that has notes of aged balsamic vinegar, liquorice pastille and menthol. This powerful and broad wine with its chunky tannins on the finish is closer to Amarone than the designation Valpolicella Superiore would suggest. Long, smoky and powerful, with lingering tannins." Decanter
"This Valpolicella is a horse of a different colour: dense and creamy, with a rich, saturated sense of layers of baked black and red currants, fig tart, loamy earth, earl grey and cigar box spice notes. Framed by fine-grained, taut tannins and plum-skinned acidity, it is long and fragrant on the finish." Wine Spectator
"The Valpolicella Superiore Lodoletta 2019 is heavenly. A vibrant blend of fresh black cherries combines with autumnal spices and almond paste, complicated by a hint of orange-infused dark chocolate. Over time, peppery rose tones and nuances of shaved cedar are added. It is a model of elegance and refinement, silky and supple, with bright red berry fruit and mineral tones balanced by a hint of citrus, and a core of vibrant acidity. The 2019 finishes exceptionally long and full of savoury tension, leaving a hint of bitter clove pinching the cheeks while a hint of graphite lingers. This is a fabulous interpretation of Dal Forno's Valpolicella. Don't miss out on this beautiful beast." Vinous
"Wow. A super intense and perfumed wine with flavours of vibrant plums, restrained blood oranges, sweet spices, cloves, coconut, gardenias, milk and fresh mint. Full-bodied and supple, with velvety, elegant tannins, great density and a long, refreshing and balancing acidity. Slender finish with graphite and liquorice. Despite its concentration and dry extract, it shows lightness on the palate." James Suckling
