“Scaia Rossa” Corvina Veneto IGT 2020
In Valpolicella, single-varietal wines from the native Corvina variety are becoming more and more common. And Scaia shows a beautiful portrait: light ruby red, mineral notes in the bouquet, plus small red berries and cherries, round on the palate with good freshness. Wonderful to drink. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rather jammy strawberry and raspberry on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with intensity of fruit and some fine tannin that does little to impede the flow. Glass stopper. Good and fruity. Drink now." James Suckling

“Capitel Lucchine” Valpolicella Classico DOC 2022
The Lucchine is rich and firm with beautiful cherry fruit and sweet spices on the palate. A juicy and inexpensive wine from a good vineyard that gives us great pleasure every year. SUPERIORE.DE
"The only Valpolicella without oak. This wine resembles a more mature Bardolino or, to put it this way, a Venetian Beaujolais, as it is so lively and vibrant. Light and juicy, with a thread of crisp acidity that carries sour red fruits, plums and dried herbs long and easy. Delicious! One of the best young Valpolicella I've tasted in a while." James Suckling
"On the nose, this wine shines with aromas of fresh rose and violet, with hints of strawberries and cranberries in the background. On the palate, the tart red berries shine with a hint of pepper and fresh earth." Wine Enthusiast

Valpolicella DOC 2022
Brigaldara's Valpolicella is mainly made from Corvina and Corvinone grapes. The timing of the harvest is very important for this wine, so that its flavours are very delicate and its sensory balance is influenced by the precisely measured acidity. It expresses the characteristic flavours of the valley: from cherries to spicy notes, which are more or less pronounced depending on the vintage. Its beautiful and radiant balance is achieved by a short maturation in steel, which perfectly enhances its sensory characteristics. SUPERIORE.DE
"This wine is a classic example of Valpolicella with aromas of fresh raspberries and dried cranberries mixed with thyme, sage and forest floor leading to a lively palate. Driven by sour cherries, the palate is indulgent and generous, and the more it opens up, the more spicy and floral notes add complexity." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2022 Valpolicella is wonderfully fresh, with a gorgeous blend of violets and roses giving way to muddled blackberries and an air of crushed chalk. Incredibly pure, this flows across the palate with a juicy wave of ripe wild berry fruits. It finishes crisp, with a tart cranberry concentration and inner florals that linger on." Vinous

Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso DOC 2021
Brigaldara's Ripasso is created by the secondary fermentation of Valpolicella wine on the pomace of Amarone della Valpolicella. The contact between the Valpolicella wine and the Amarone marc, which is still rich in sugar, triggers a new fermentation. Bright ruby red colour. Bright and cheerful with aromas reminiscent of dried cherry, plum, pear and apricot. This wine shows plenty of bright fruit definition with subtle hints of tobacco, spice and rose petal. The finish is smooth, polished and soft in tannin structure. Very structured and balanced, gaining complexity with further bottle ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso impresses with its remarkable freshness, as steeped plums come together with sweet spices, wildflowers and tangerine zest. This is surprisingly juicy and lifted in style yet still quite deep, with masses of tart wild berry fruits and saline mineral tones guided by bright acidity. It tapers off with a lively tension and a tart orange twist that keeps the mouth watering for more. This is a gorgeous Ripasso that finishes at just 0.6 grams-per-liter of residual sugar." Vinous

Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2021
The Valpolicella Superiore from Allegrini is a fruity and at the same time very sophisticated drinking pleasure. The multi-layered flavours of blackberry and black cherry and the sweet melt on the palate find the perfect harmony and strength with a fine bitter almond component. SUPERIORE.DE
"Reductive, rich notes of blackcurrants, leaves, dark cherries and root spice. A classic blend of corvina, corvinone, rondinella and oseleta. Yet despite the obvious weight, there is a deft touch to the mid-palate and a detailed, fresh note to the sappy finish." James Suckling
"This wine's aromas are captivating. The nose is a true sensory experience, with notes of wild berries mixed with hints of herbs, bell peppers and forest floor. The palate continues with a mix of blueberries, strawberries, subtle dried herbal notes, savory spices and fine tannins. The palate vibrates with the right amount of acidity to keep it all together on the finish." Wine Enthusiast

“Case Vecie” Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2021
Valpolicella Superiore Case Vecie is made mainly from Corvina and Corvinone grapes. It takes its name from the vineyard of the same name in Grezzana, where the ripening of the grapes is subject to strong temperature fluctuations between day and night: a climatic peculiarity that gives the wine a special spiciness on the nose and a completely unique polyphenol profile. Bright ruby red in colour with notes of cherries, vanilla and spices. Beautiful fruit and acidity on the palate, wonderfully balanced body. Juicy and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium carmine red colour. A little Amarone-like with dried dark cherries, as if it had walked over the skins of Amarone. A hint of dried fruit. Peppery and with a hint of oak. No doubt, we are in Valpolicella. Smooth and generous without being heavy. Such a pleasant wine." Jancis Robinson
"The Valpolicella Superiore Case Vecie 2021 is particularly floral and airy, with a lively bouquet of dusty roses, dried strawberries and a hint of sour orange. It is a paragon of purity, with crisp red berry fruit and tactile mineral notes accompanied by juicy acidity. The 2021 finishes incredibly fresh, revealing a pleasant, crisp tannin as the tart cherry notes slowly fade away. The Valpolicella Superiore Case Vecie from a single vineyard is simply stunning and is produced without the appassimento process." Vinous
"This producer is one of the best of the region, opting for a more traditional approach. This ups the ante. Exotic notes of orange peel, cloves, tamarind, cardamom and sweet red currants, with some hints of partially dehydrated grapes. Good, sappy length." James Suckling
"This Valpolicella rises from the glass with fresh aromas of wild cherries and red plums that give way to violets, rosemary and fresh earth. The palate is bright with ripe red berries, allspice, vanilla, black tea and sweet and savoury spices, finishing with an electric acidity that refreshes the palate after every sip." Wine Enthusiast

Valpolicella Ripasso Valpantena DOC 2020
Bertani's Ripasso is a true classic. The grapes come from the hills around Valpantena and from the direct Valpolicella Classico area. The production at Bertani is carried out according to the old traditional method: The young, already fermented Valpolicella wine is blended with the skins, which have dried naturally in the meantime, giving it a richer and more concentrated aroma. It then undergoes a second so-called "ripasso" fermentation, which is triggered by the yeasts that are still sufficiently present in the skins.
Intense purple with violet reflections. On the nose, numerous dark red fruits such as blackberry, currant and ripe cherry. It has a slightly bitter aftertaste, which, with the slightly increased residual sweetness, results in an exciting yet dry impression. Velvety and balanced, with quite a long finish. An ideal wine for the darker months and an excellent companion for strong and aromatic dishes. SUPERIORE.DE
"The original Ripasso wine would have been more of a super-charged Valpolicella than a mini Amarone, and this example is true to that type, highlighting the fresh and lighter style of the Valpantena, a long, steeply sloping valley with a particularly cool microclimate. Clean and fresh with ripe and forward cherry fruit aromas accompanied by subtle dried fruit shadings, it's zingy with positive acidity and lightly exotic fruit flavours, ending with a clean and firm finish." If there is one Italian wine region where red wine lovers can find everything their hearts desire, it is the Valpolicella zone in Veneto, located east of Lake Garda near the Soave area between the cities of Bardolino and Verona. The name Valpolicella itself derives from the Latin term "Vallis Poli Cellae" and translates as "the valley of many cellars", whose growing area hides a rich variety of wine styles that have often been overlooked due to the prominence of Amarone wine.
The reason for this varied wine repertoire is that Valpolicella winemakers process their harvested grapes into light, juicy wines, while they press the stronger versions using the appassimento process from dried grapes. From the concentrated Amarone to its more delicate counterparts, however, they are all made from 45-95% late-ripening Corvina, which provides intense fruit notes and is usually blended with up to 30-50% local varieties Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and Oseleta.
The bottles that carry the Classico addition on the label come from the historic Valpolicella Classico core zone with its very hilly vineyard sites that stretch along the towns of Fumane, Marano, San Pietro in Cariano, Sant'Ambrogio and Negrar.
The lighter wines include the simple Valpolicella and the Valpolicella Classico, which convince with fruity aromas of sour cherries, blackberries, light bitter notes and a nice acidity. These young red wines are often served slightly chilled and are particularly appealing to those who actually prefer white wine. As an entry-level category, they are the true calling card of a good winemaker who devotes the same care and passion to the production of his less expensive Valpolicella wines as he does to his precious Amarone bottles.
If you are looking for a little more zest and spice in addition to stimulating fruity notes, climb further up the quality pyramid and try the somewhat more structured Valpolicella wines labelled Superiore. This somewhat tart but nevertheless fruity style of wine has an alcohol content of 12% and its official minimum maturation period of one year may well take place in wooden barrels.
Even more intensity and structure are offered by the Valpolicella wines with the addition Ripasso, which are partly produced from dried grapes. The fact that this refined style of wine is also called a "baby Amarone" is explained by the Ripasso production method, with which the flavourful character of the Valpolicella wines is enhanced by the addition of pressed grape skins from Amarone production. The result is a style of wine that is the link between the bracingly fruity versions and the powerful Amarone, delighting with intense notes of dried fruits, spices, delicate tannins and slightly more alcohol - and more affordable compared to its better-known big brother.
So while you can certainly start the evening with a young and lively Valpolicella and then move on to the Superiore or Ripasso wines, a slightly chilled glass of Recioto della Valpolicella is certainly the perfect way to end it. This rich red wine made from dried grapes is the sweet twin of Amarone and was considered the true star of the Valpolicella region long before its hype. If we now add to this the excellent IGT wines, which do not have DOC status only because of their choice of grape variety, then we are sure that there is something exciting for every red wine lover in our Valpolicella range.
