When Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti bought a farmstead in the village of Notri, south of the medieval town of Suvereto in the Colline Metallifere, in 1984, they had no wine plan. They wanted nature, peace and quiet, a piece of land. The passion for wine changed that – slowly, inevitably, as it always does. The first vintage of Giusto di Notri was produced in 1992, named after San Giusto, the patron saint of Suvereto, and after the location of the estate itself. Eight years later, her Redigaffi was the first Italian wine ever to receive 100 points from Robert Parker. Tua Rita had redrawn the wine map of the Maremma.

Giusto di Notri is the other face of this house: not a pure Merlot, but a Bordeaux blend – 80 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 per cent each Merlot and Cabernet Franc – from the vineyards on clayey, gravelly soils of the Colline Metallifere, organically farmed, 8,500 vines per hectare. The sea breezes from the nearby coast keep the temperatures in balance; the mineral traces in the soil – zinc, iron, the typical signature of this former ore mining landscape – are written into the wine. 25 to 30 days of maceration after careful hand-picking, fermentation in wooden vats, then 18 to 20 months in French barriques, some of which are new, some of which have been used once. No heavyweight from the wood – the wine leads.

The 2021 vintage gives Giusto di Notri the stage it deserves: concentrated but without heaviness, structured but without harshness. Deep ruby red in the glass with a violet tinge. The nose is rich and complex: ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, plus cardamom, tobacco, herbs and the fine mineral depth of the soil. Full-bodied on the palate, dense and polished at the same time – the tannin is ripe and woven in many layers, the acidity keeps everything moving, the finish is long, spicy and persistent.
