When Georg Weber set foot on the hills below Capalbio in the early 2000s, he knew that his search was over. The Bordeaux lover had travelled the wine world – from Pauillac to Napa Valley – to finally find the terroir in the southern Maremma that would realise his dream: Tuscany's first Premier Grand Cru. Monteverro – named after the wild boar, the "verro", which has always roamed the maquis of this coastal landscape – was born.
The 2021 vintage embodies the essence of this uncompromising project. The cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Cabernet Franc (40%), Merlot (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%) comes from the best plots of the organically farmed vineyard, where 7,575 vines per hectare are rooted on clay and limestone with eroded stones. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea provides cool nights and that salty breeze that gives the wines their unmistakable freshness. In the cellar, precision reigns without compromise: Each parcel is vinified separately, fermentation takes place naturally and movement is exclusively by gravity. Twenty-four months in French barriques – seventy per cent of which are new – form a wine of monumental elegance. No fining, no filtration: what comes into the glass is a pure expression of the terroir.
Black cherry red in colour with Ferrari reflections on the rim, the 2021 reveals a bouquet of beguiling complexity: rose and violet intertwine with blueberry, thyme and oregano before cedar and graphite reveal the depth. The palate reveals velvety opulence that develops into a fresh centre palette – blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry stone and black olives on the finish. Monteverro 2021 is not a wine that you drink – it is a wine you encounter. SUPERIORE.DE
"Brilliant, rich ruby red colour. The aroma, which becomes more complex with air, is quite pure and straight with ripe cassis fruit, red wild cherries, smoky hints, very fine roasted aromas with precious woods, lead pencil and this mineral note reminiscent of iron, very delicate paprika spice from the Cabernet Franc. Polished fullness on the palate, tightly meshed, the ripe and sweet fruit lies wonderfully over the polished tannin, which is still youthful and grippy, but refined, quite powerful, delicately astringent, but shows that it is a subtle Monteverro with a great arc of tension that needs at least 5 more years." Weinwisser
"A promising Anteprima that is still maturing in the cellar: Still with a lot of primary aromas, but already of great harmony with lots of fruit, spices, also orange zest, then on the palate with pulsating acidity and fine-grained tannins, still very young but with potential. One thing can already be said: Cabernet Franc is becoming increasingly dominant in the blend." Vinum
"Bright, rich ruby red with a violet tinge. Complex spice on the nose, cold smoke, ripe cassis fruit, precious wood, some black cherry, fine ferrous notes round off the bouquet. Great, sweet fruit on the palate, embedded in savoury, rounded tannins, tightly woven, lots of grip and salinity, long, still somewhat brittle on the final." Falstaff
"The 2021 Monteverro is a darkly saturated expression that is tightly focused and linear in presentation but is also quite generous in terms of texture. That pretty duality can be applied to the bouquet and to the mouthfeel, where the wine offers a lot of tonality and volume, all delivered with pretty sharpness." Wine Advocate
"Intense and succulent, it combines fragrances of hedgerow berries, violets and sottobosco with a ripe core of herb-infused dark berries and hints of spice. The tannins are silky and refined, and flavours of intense black cherry and coffee emerge on the long, fresh finish." Decanter
"This is a subtle Monteverro with graphite, currants, blackberries and some blackcurrants. Very pure and fresh. Medium- to full-bodied with crunchy berry, chocolate and hazelnut flavors. Fine, creamy tannins." James Suckling
