Elisabetta Geppetti is more than just a winemaker – she is the "Signora del Morellino", the energetic woman who took over the reins of the family winery at the age of just 20 and helped the Maremma region to achieve international renown. When she pressed the first Morellino in 1985, she laid the foundations for a success story that continues to this day. This wine is the quantitative and qualitative calling card of Le Pupille – a constant, authentic expression of the terroir between Pereta and Magliano in Tuscany. The Morellino combines Sangiovese (90%) with Alicante and the autochthonous Ciliegiolo (5% each) from vineyards exposed to the south-west at an altitude of 50 to 250 metres. The vines, some of which are over 40 years old, are rooted in skeleton-rich, clayey and ferrous soils, cooled by sea breezes and strengthened by pronounced day-night temperature differences. After the harvest at the end of September, the must ferments on the skins for 15 days and matures for eight months, mainly in stainless steel tanks with a small proportion in used barriques.

The Riserva represents the roots of Fattoria Le Pupille – it is the very first wine produced and marketed by the winery. Originally launched in 1978 as "Rosso di Pereta", it became the foundation of a terroir with the establishment of the Morellino di Scansano discipline, which Elisabetta Geppetti led to international recognition with passion and vision. As the first woman to head the Consorzio Morellino di Scansano, she not only shaped the denomination, but also the entire Maremma wine culture. Sangiovese (90%) with Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) from the La Carla, Maiano, Bozzino and Vecchie Pupille vineyards at an altitude of 50 to 250 metres. The soils vary from clayey-silty to sandy-loamy structures with a limestone marl component. After 25 to 30 days of maceration at 26 degrees, the wine matures for twelve months in Slavonian oak barrels with a capacity of 20 to 40 hectolitres.

There are wines that define a region. Saffredi is one of them. In 1987, when Elisabetta Geppetti – just in her mid-twenties and with the vision of helping the sleepy Maremma region achieve world fame – created this wine together with the legendary Giacomo Tachis, nobody could have guessed that a Supertuscan was born here that would rival Sassicaia and Tignanello. The name is a loving tribute to Fredi, Elisabetta's father-in-law Alfredo Gentili, who sparked her passion for wine and planted the five-hectare vineyard in the 1980s from which the grapes for Saffredi are still sourced today. The single vineyard Saffredi near Pereta lies at an altitude of 250 metres, south-west for the old vines and south-east for the newer plantings. The soil is the result of millions of years of geological history: Sandstone origin, rich in limestone marl and iron minerals, poor in organic matter, with clay layers only from a depth of 30 centimetres. On clear days, the view from here sweeps over the hills to the Mediterranean 25 kilometres away – a proximity to the coast that gives the wine its special freshness and tension.

There are wines that define a region. Saffredi is one of them. In 1987, when Elisabetta Geppetti – just in her mid-twenties and with the vision of helping the sleepy Maremma region achieve world fame – created this wine together with the legendary Giacomo Tachis, nobody could have guessed that a Supertuscan was born here that would rival Sassicaia and Tignanello. The name is a loving tribute to Fredi, Elisabetta's father-in-law Alfredo Gentili, who sparked her passion for wine and planted the five-hectare vineyard in the 1980s from which the grapes for Saffredi are still sourced today. The single vineyard Saffredi near Pereta lies at an altitude of 250 metres, south-west for the old vines and south-east for the newer plantings. The soil is the result of millions of years of geological history: Sandstone origin, rich in limestone marl and iron minerals, poor in organic matter, with clay layers only from a depth of 30 centimetres. On clear days, the view from here sweeps over the hills to the Mediterranean 25 kilometres away – a proximity to the coast that gives the wine its special freshness and tension.

When Elisabetta Geppetti swapped the lecture hall for work in the wine cellar at the age of just twenty, she dreamed of drawing the international wine world's attention to the potential of the hitherto unnoticed Maremma region. As a result, the family's old farmhouse in the midst of the Grosseto hills - which is depicted on some of their wine labels - was transformed into a modern winery in the mid-1980s.
For the ambitious winemaker, the terroir of southern Tuscany should be reflected in her top wines, which is why she planted mainly Cabernet Sauvignon instead of Sangiovese because of the Mediterranean coastal climate that prevails here. At that time, however, she could never have imagined that thanks to her knack for Bordelais varieties, Fattoria Le Pupille would actually become one of the most famous wineries in Tuscany.
"I have five children and I call Saffredi my sixth child," Elisabetta says with a laugh. To make the Maremma known as a top-class area of origin, the winemaker knew how to work with the right professionals: She laid the foundation for her success with none other than the Antinori oenologist Giacomo Tachis, who advised her in 1987 on the vinification of the Super Tuscan Saffredi, named after her father-in-law Fredi, from the varieties Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
A few years later, she created her outstanding Sangiovese wine from the top vineyard Poggio Valente with the Umbrian winemaker Riccardo Cotarella, before proving with her Rosé RosaMati and the oenologist Christian Le Sommer from the Château Latour winery that it is also possible to produce absolutely outstanding Syrah wines in the Maremma. Her wine style is characterised above all by a very multi-layered aroma and an impressive continuity, which run like a red thread through the varied range.
Today, the pioneer winemaker of the Maremma is advised by the talented Andrea Lupi, who follows an ecological and biodynamic philosophy in the wine cellar and on the over 80 hectares of vineyards. Fattoria Le Pupille has thus become an extremely important flagship for the area, especially since Elisabetta is affectionately referred to as the "Signora del Morellino" and as an ambassador for the entire region because of her typical Morellino di Scansano wines.
She also passed on her passion to the family: the two eldest children, Clara and Ettore, have long been important components of Fattoria Le Pupille and, with the same ambition, produce fascinating cult wines that have completely redefined the reputation of the Maremma area. SUPERIORE.DE
