“Monna 1475” Bianco Toscana IGT 2024
Capezzana is opening a new chapter with the Monna 1475 series – fresh, accessible and uncomplicated, without abandoning the quality standards of the traditional Tenuta. The Bianco combines Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc to create a Mediterranean cuvée that is vinified in stainless steel tanks to preserve the lively fruitiness and freshness of the grapes. A wine for the moment, to be drunk young and a perfect match for Capezzana's vision of getting younger wine lovers excited about Carmignano. In the glass, the 2024 is bright yellow in colour with green reflections. The bouquet is fruity with notes of tropical fruit – pineapple, banana – and delicate hints of white and yellow flowers. Soft and full on the palate, with beautiful harmony and balance. The structure is pleasantly present, the refreshing acidity is perfectly balanced, the finish is medium-long and fruity with floral notes. An uncomplicated, elegant white wine that is just as convincing as an aperitif as it is with light fish dishes and seafood – tuscan lifestyle in a glass, naturally from the best vineyards! The name tells a story: Barco Reale means "royal enclosure" and refers to the historic Medici hunting reserve, which was established in 1626 – a ring of walls over 50 kilometres long surrounded the area where Sangiovese, Cabernet and Canaiolo thrive today. Barco Reale Rosso is the younger, more accessible version of Carmignano DOCG, was awarded its own DOC status in 1994 and epitomises the elegance of this small but important Tuscan appellation. Tenuta di Capezzana has been run by the Contini Bonacossi family for five generations and represents over seventy per cent of the entire Carmignano production. The first documented mention of Capezzana dates back to 804, and as early as the 16th century, Caterina de' Medici had Cabernet cuttings brought to Carmignano from Bordeaux – centuries before the Super Tuscans discovered this idea for themselves. The winery has been certified organic since 2009.

Capezzana's Trebbiano blossoms in the glass with a sweet floral bouquet of crushed yellow apples, peaches, aniseed, sweet sage and dusty stone. It is round and supple, with a depth of ripe white stone fruit perfectly contrasted by salty minerals and a hint of spice. The fresh acidity provides a nice balance. The finish is long, classically dry and youthfully tense. Already wonderful today, but still needs further bottle ageing to fully develop. SUPERIORE.DE

"Our greatest good is our land. It's been feeding us for generations, and we want it to stay that way. So we must treat it with respect," is the motto of the Contini Bonacossi family. Well, that's what almost all wine producers say. But hardly anyone formulated it as forcefully and convincingly as the over 90-year-old senior, Conte Ugo Contini Bonacossi, who was already over 90 at the time.
Of course, this has a background, because the first attempts to switch to organic cultivation ended in a disaster. So you started a second time, slower and more careful. You could say over decades. New vineyards were planted more densely, with 6000 to 9000 vines per hectare, enormous hours invested and finally all vineyards and olive groves were certified organic.
Finally, the splendid palazzo from the early Renaissance, which sits on the hills near Carmigiano, just a few kilometres west of Florence, was renovated in an exemplary manner and transformed into a lively meeting place. It was also Conte Ugo who made Carmigiano a DOC again, against all resistance from the authorities, by proving that Carmigiano already existed a quarter of a millennium ago as a wine-growing region with defined borders. Actually, the Etruscans cultivated wine here 3,000 years ago.
A vineyard Capezzana is documented in writing in the year 804. The Contini Bonacossi family bought the property from the Rothschilds in the 1920s. It is said that the same Cabernet Sauvignon clones grow here as on Château Lafite. Cabernet has a very long tradition here, in addition to Sangiovese. Vittorio Contini Bonacossi, who managed the estate until his surprising death, also loved autochthonous varieties and planted more Canaiolo and Mammolo. Benedetta and Gaddo continue these traditions in cellars and vineyards. The Carmigiano region, which has since been upgraded to DOCG, allows this variety diversity because it wanted to counteract the acidity of Sangiovese. Therefore the wines here are a little rounder, milder than in the rest of the Chianti area and wonderfully fruity, with a very fine tannin structure. To a certain extent elegance with tradition.
Serena, Vittorio's daughter, has now opened the winery to the public and has set up a wine bar, an agriturismo with wonderful rooms and a cooking school. Filippo takes care of the more than 30,000 olive trees, which are cultivated on about 140 hectares and cultivated by hand with the help of countless small farmers.
