Villa di Capezzana has been the Tenuta's flagship since 1925 and is a living testimony to Tuscan wine culture. This Carmignano DOCG epitomises the vision of the Contini Bonacossi family, who for five generations have been cultivating the heritage of a wine estate whose first documented mention dates back to 804. In 1975, Carmignano was the first Tuscan DOC zone ever to officially include Cabernet Sauvignon in the assemblage – centuries before the Super Tuscans discovered this idea for themselves. The tradition goes back to the 16th century, when Caterina de' Medici had Cabernet cuttings brought to Carmignano from Bordeaux.
The cuvée of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards between 180 and 250 metres above sea level. The Sangiovese is harvested at the end of September and the Cabernet at the beginning of October, both at optimum ripeness. The soils of clay, limestone, slate and galestro give the wine the characteristic freshness and minerality that characterise Carmignano. The winery has been certified organic since 2009 and the eighty hectares of vineyards are cultivated according to strict organic principles. After gentle manual harvesting, the must ferments for seven days in stainless steel tanks, followed by thirteen days of maceration at 26 to 28 degrees. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French tonneaux, where fifty per cent of the wine is then matured for at least twelve months, while the other fifty per cent is aged for sixteen months in large barrels – a balanced combination that gives the wine complexity and elegance. Bottling is followed by at least a further twelve months of ageing in the bottle.
In the glass, the 2021 has a deep ruby red colour with violet hues. The elegant bouquet unfolds notes of sour cherry, raspberry and dark cherry, underpinned by violet, liquorice, vanilla and delicate hints of tobacco and leather. The palate is soft and enveloping, with velvety tannins and a well-proportioned body. The acidity is present but perfectly integrated into the tannin-rich structure. The finish is long and elegant, with an aftertaste tending towards sweet liquorice – a wine of remarkable harmony, class and impressive longevity. Capezzana deliberately holds back thousands of bottles for release after a decade or more, as Carmignano needs time to develop its full complexity. Incidentally, Villa di Capezzana is considered one of the longest-lived wines in Tuscany, with a vertical tasting of 20 vintages dating back to 1937 – none of the vintages showed signs of fatigue. "Multifaceted perfume of small forest fruits, blood oranges and sandalwood; balanced on the palate, the tannins are robust, the final is long on notes of fresh berries, violets and spices. Convinces with its polish." Vinum
"The low-yielding 2021 vintage produced a wine of great concentration, with a rich purple-ruby colour and a distinctly phenolic nose with notes of peat and newsprint before the ripe fruit. The palate is dense and compact, with tannins that will carry the wine into the decades to come and a powerful, grippy finish. The Villa di Capezzana, which is released after at least three years, is technically a Riserva, but the policy has always been to keep the original label as Carmignano." Decanter
"A taut and fairly tannic medium-bodied Carmignano with plenty of structure and aromas and flavours of chocolate, walnuts, dark cherries and a hint of smoke. It is straightforward and long with power, suggesting that it needs to mature for another three to four years in the bottle." James Suckling
