In 1994, whilst Lodovico Antinori was searching for suitable land to expand his Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, he discovered, almost by chance, the hills of Bibbona that were to rewrite his destiny as a winemaker. What he found there was not just land – it was a revelation. The soils – a complex symphony of clay and the legendary Bolgheri conglomerate – the orientation of the slopes, the salty breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea – —all spoke a different language to the familiar Ornellaia terroir. Too different, too wild, too full of character for a simple extension. And yet too fascinating to let go of.

Eight years later, following the sale of Ornellaia, he returned. This time with his brother Piero – a reconciliation between two giants of the Tuscan wine world, whose names would be forever linked to this project. Il Pino di Biserno became their first joint release, named after the majestic pine tree that has watched over the vineyards for generations. The blend is dominated by Cabernet Franc with its aristocratic elegance, followed by silky Merlot and the structure-giving Bordeaux classics. Twelve months’ ageing in French barriques – some new, some used – lend the wine a depth that oscillates between youthful vigour and timeless finesse.

In the glass, a ruby-red universe of beguiling intensity unfolds. The nose reveals dark fruits in their finest form – —not sweet, but imbued with mineral clarity, enveloped by the scents of the Mediterranean maquis: rosemary, myrtle, a hint of lavender. Underlying this is the subtle toasting of the wood, never overpowering, always supportive. On the palate, the true greatness of this wine unfolds: full-bodied yet imbued with a freshness that only the sea can bestow. The tannins, polished like Carrara marble, support a structure of impressive architecture. Here, the terroir of Bibbona speaks its own language – —salty, mineral, vibrant.
