When Georg Weber set foot on the hills below Capalbio in the early 2000s, he knew his search was over. The Bordeaux enthusiast had travelled the world of wine – from Pauillac to Napa Valley – only to finally find, in the southern Maremma, the terroir that would make his dream a reality: Tuscany's first Premier Grand Cru. Monteverro – named after the wild boar, the 'verro', which has roamed the scrubland of this coastal landscape since time immemorial – was born.

The 2021 vintage embodies the essence of this uncompromising project. The cuvée, comprising Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Cabernet Franc (40%), Merlot (10 per cent) and Petit Verdot (5 per cent) comes from the finest plots of the organically farmed vineyard, where 7,575 vines per hectare are rooted in clay and limestone mixed with eroded stones. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea brings cool nights and that salty breeze which lends the wines their unmistakable freshness. In the cellar, precision reigns without compromise: each plot is vinified separately, fermentation is natural, and movement is achieved solely by gravity. Twenty-four months in French barriques – seventy% of which are new – produce a wine of monumental elegance. No fining, no filtration: what ends up in the glass is the pure expression of the terroir.

Deep black cherry red with Ferrari-red highlights at the rim, the 2021 vintage unfolds a bouquet of beguiling complexity: rose and violet intertwine with blueberry, thyme and oregano, before cedar and graphite reveal its depth. On the palate, it displays velvety opulence that develops into a fresh mid-palate – blackcurrant, blackberry, with cherry stone and black olives on the finish. On the nose, which becomes more complex with aeration, it is quite pure and straightforward, with ripe blackcurrant, wild red cherries, smoky hints, very subtle toasty notes of precious woods, pencil lead and that mineral note reminiscent of iron, along with a very delicate hint of paprika from the Cabernet Franc. On the palate, a polished richness, intricately structured; the ripe, sweet fruit drapes beautifully over the polished tannins, which are still youthful and firm, yet sophisticatedly layered, quite powerful, delicately astringent, yet demonstrating that this is a subtle Monteverro with great depth and complexity, which still needs to be laid down for at least another 5 years."
