Crognolo is a wonderfully balanced wine that offers the tangy freshness and acidity of Sangiovese, which is balanced and softened by the small proportion of Merlot. The wine smells of cherry, blackberry and plum. Its primary intensity is bright and cheerful. The juicy finish shows a nice density, extraction and well-integrated tannins. SUPERIORE.DE

“Vigna dell’Impero 1935” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2020 (BIO)
In the annals of Tuscan wine history, there are vineyards that bear witness to dynasties and eras, and the Vigna dell'Impero is one of these living monuments. In 1935, in that fateful year when Europe was on the eve of great upheavals, the Savoia royal family had a vineyard planted on their hunting reserve in Valdarno di Sopra, which is now one of the most venerable terroirs in Tuscany. Three hectares of terraced vineyards, planted by hand at an altitude of 300 metres, where the Sangiovese vines dig their roots deep into the stony, galestro-rich soil. Antonio Moretti Cuseri recognised the exceptional quality of this ancient site and decided in 2012 to create a limited edition from this historic cru. Only in the best vintages, in numbered bottles, as a tribute to 85 years of winegrowing history. The Sangiovese in Purezza undergoes a particularly gentle, one-month maceration to extract all the noble components of the grapes harvested at optimum phenolic ripeness. 24 months of ageing in large 15 and 25 hectolitre barrels, followed by months of bottle ageing without filtration – to preserve the purest terroir notes.

In the heart of the Valdarno Superiore, where the ancient Via dei Setteponti inspired Leonardo da Vinci's immortal landscape studies, lies the Tenuta Sette Ponti – named after the seven bridges that have connected Arezzo and Florence since Etruscan times. Here, on 300 hectares between history and modernity, Dr Antonio Moretti Cuseri realised a visionary idea in 1999: to create a Tuscan Bordeaux style that combines international elegance with the soul of Tuscany. Oreno – named after the small river that crosses the tenuta in the clay-rich zone where the Merlot vines take deepest root – was born out of a passion for Bordeaux finesse. Moretti Cuseri, fascinated by his travels to Bordeaux, had existing vineyards grafted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. While Merlot thrives in the clay soils, Cabernet vines find their home in gravelled terraces that offer perfect drainage and natural temperature regulation. The Petit Verdot completes the cuvée with spicy notes and intense flavours.

The Sangiovese grapes for this wine come from the vineyard of the Empire of His Royal Highness, the Count of Turin, Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, who planted it in 1935. The soil is a mixture of clay and gravel, rich in marl and rock, which gives the grapes a spectacular minerality. The temperature fluctuations during the day play a decisive role in developing the finest flavours, which are elegant and complex. The wine, bottled in numbered bottles, is not filtered in order to preserve all the typical varietal notes and characteristics of Sangiovese. SUPERIORE.DE

While Tenuta Sette Ponti takes its name from the seven bridges over the Arno, Sette is named after the up to seven different vineyards that provide the fruit for this 100% Merlot wine: these are the Cypress, Salvareccio I, Salvareccio II, Poggio Sinistro, Sorbaccio, Nocetta I and Nocetta II vineyards. Aromatic and earthy, fragrant notes of cherry and cool blue fruit introduce a ripe and fresh palate that is light on its feet, vertical and balanced. The mid-palate has a stony element, while the red and blue fruits are supported by a network of tannins and good acidity.

SUPERIORE.DE

2020 is the first organic Oreno vintage. Deep dark ruby violet. On the nose, cassis, blackcurrant and a powerful herbal spice with a good dose of pipe tobacco, tar and crushed boulders. On the palate, dark berries, chocolate and a cornucopia of herbs define the full body. This juicy wine monument has precisely integrated tannins, an enormous silkiness and a seemingly endless finish. The name of the Sette Ponti vineyard, located near Arezzo in Chianti Classico, comes from the seven bridges between Arezzo and Florence that motorists have to cross on the way there. The vineyards were planted by the former owner, Archduke Leopold of Habsburg. The property later passed to the Savoy family dynasty, which, however, only took care of the vineyards from time to time. In 1935, the vines were planted for the Chianti Vigna di Pallino, which is still produced today. In the mid-1990s, Antonio Moretti took over the estate from his father Alberto, who had originally bought the country house in the 1950s with the intention of being able to go hunting from there with friends.
Viticulture has always been practised at Tenuta Sette Ponti. But it was not until 1996 that Antonio, who owns several other estates in Italy, dedicated himself to this work with greater commitment. He hired an international team of experts to bring the winery far forward in terms of quality and to have all the necessary changes made for this step. In 1998, Antonio created the Crognolo, mainly from the Sangiovese grape variety, and a year later the cult wine Oreno, a cuvée mainly from the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties.
Antonio is supported by a top-class technical team with Oenologist Carlo Ferrini and his assistant Gioia Cresti. Ferrini is considered an important and innovative business consultant in the Tuscan wine world. For example, he has already worked for the Castello di Brolio, Castello di Fonterutoli, Poliziano and Castello di Terriccio wineries and has been running his own wineries in Montalcino and on Etna for several years, where he produces great wines.
Tenuta Sette Ponti extends over 330 hectares, of which more than 50 are planted with vines. The oldest vineyard, the Vigna dell'Impero, was planted in 1935. Today, it is mainly used for the IGT wine Oreno, and a small part of it has been used for the pure Sangiovese Vigna dell'Impero for a few years. Since the 2020 vintage, almost all the vineyards of the winery have been certified organic. SUPERIORE.DE
