Chianti Classico DOCG 2022
The 2022 marks a significant transition: it is the last vintage that Paolo de Marchi characterised before Emanuele Reolon took over as technical director. But the signature remains unmistakable. Since the 1980s, de Marchi was one of the first in Chianti Classico to plant high-density vineyards with low-yielding Sangiovese clones on poor Galestro soils at an altitude of 400 metres – a revolution in quality. The cuvée of 90% Sangiovese, supplemented by 10% Canaiolo, ferments for twelve days in stainless steel using the characteristic délestage method, which de Marchi has been refining since 1996. Seven months of ageing in barriques of different sizes give the wine complexity without dominance.

![Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC 2011 dolce <br>in gift box]()
Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC 2011 dolce · in gift box
The grapes for one of the most elegant and ethereal Vin Santo in Chianti Classico are dried before they are pressed and then sealed in barrels for nine years. Paolo de Marchi calls it "lazy winemaking" and admits: "The blending process is actually the most challenging part, as every barrel is different and after tasting 10 barrels, palate fatigue sets in". The result is a very elegant and pure Vin Santo that has beguiling notes of candied fruit, honey and sweet spices. The balance between sweetness and acidity keeps the wine light, lively and refreshing, and it has a smoky edge on the finish. This is a great Vin Santo, and although it has more than 200g/litre of residual sugar, it is surprisingly light, refreshing and easy to drink. SUPERIORE.DE

![Chardonnay Toscana IGT 2023]()
Chardonnay Toscana IGT 2023
In 1987, Paolo De Marchi ventured an experiment that was to become legendary: he grafted Chardonnay vines onto existing vines in the wooded vineyards of Isole e Olena. What began as a bold venture developed into one of the most extraordinary white wines in Tuscany – a silent masterpiece that is also known as "silent wine" due to its low production volume. The 2023 vintage tells the story of a special terroir: the five hectares of vines in the northernmost part of the estate, surrounded by protective forests, create a cooler microclimate that gives the Chardonnay the mineral precision and elegance that distinguishes it from its Tuscan peers. Vines over twenty years old, harvested by hand in the first days of September, form the basis of this rarity. Paolo De Marchi's Burgundian signature is evident in the vinification: fermentation in barriques, followed by ten to twelve months of ageing on the fine lees in French oak barrels – one third new, one third second fill, one third third fill. Regular bâtonnage, initially three times a week, later once a week, gives the wine its silky texture and complex depth.

“Collezione Privata” Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT 2018
Only 5,000 bottles leave the estate – a silent witness to Paolo De Marchi's uncompromising obsession with quality. From the best Galestro and Alberese soils at high altitudes, one of Italy's most convincing Cabernets has been produced here since the 1980s. The 2018 embodies the soul of an exceptional vintage: 24 months in French barriques, forty per cent of which were new, followed by three silent years in the bottle. This patience shapes a wine of rare depth – dark blue fruit, lavender, mocha and espresso weave themselves into a complex tapestry of flavours. Burgundian elegance and Tuscan soul come together here: velvety tannins envelop concentrated cassis and blackberry flavours, while notes of sweet tobacco, graphite and chocolate characterise the long finish. A wine that rewards patience and only shows its true colours after years of ageing – paolo De Marchi's vision of Cabernet as an expression of Tuscan terroir. SUPERIORE.DE

“Collezione Privata” Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT 2019
In the quiet of 2019, Paolo De Marchi's decades-long vision of Cabernet Sauvignon as an authentic terroir expression of the Tuscan soul came to fruition. After more than forty years of tireless viticultural revolution, the maestro proved once again that international grape varieties do not become commonplace wines on the Galestro and Alberese soils of Isole e Olena, but express their new home in every drop. Only 10,000 0.75-litre bottles and 240 magnums were produced from the south-west-facing vineyards at altitudes between 350 and 400 metres. The 2019 benefits from an almost ideal vintage: mild winters, balanced rainfall in spring and a classically dry Tuscan summer produced grapes of exceptional concentration and elegance. 24 months in French barriques, forty per cent of them new, followed by three years of bottle ageing – this patience creates a wine of impressive complexity.

!["Cepparello" Toscana IGT 2020]()
“Cepparello” Toscana IGT 2020
Cepparello – named after the small stream that rises at the highest point of the Isole e Olena vineyards. This name has borne the revolutionary vision of Paolo De Marchi since 1980, when 100 per cent Sangiovese was still a taboo in Chianti Classico. With this wine, the Piedmontese visionary not only created one of the first Supertuscans, but also probably the most authentic portrait of the Sangiovese grape – pure, uncompromising, unadulterated. The Sangiovese vines grow on the characteristic Galestro soils from the estate's best sites, exposed to the south-west at an altitude of 400 to 480 metres. These slatey clay soils give the wine its unmistakable minerality and elegance. The 2020 embodies De Marchi's signature style in its purest form. A mild, dry winter and a drop in temperature in March, which required extreme vigilance against frost damage, was followed by a classic Tuscan summer. Dry and mild until the end of August, then scattered rainfall before the weather calmed down in September – ideal conditions for grapes of exceptional quality and quantity.

Opens generously and shows a fluid and steady evolution of flavours that start with tart fruits and forest floor and later develop into the soft and sensual flavours described above. The tannins are finely woven into the greater fibre of the wine, providing support without any sharpness. The overall drinking experience is seamless and smooth. “Cepparello” Toscana IGT 2021
A farewell and a new beginning at the same time. Cepparello 2021 marks Paolo De Marchi's final vintage as master of his life's work before the winery was transferred to the French EPI Group. After more than four decades of tireless work, the maestro from Piedmont completed his testament with this wine – a Sangiovese of paradoxical brilliance that retains an astonishing freshness and elegance despite its powerful fifteen per cent alcohol. The name Cepparello, which originates from the small stream at the highest point of the vineyards, has carried the revolutionary vision of one hundred per cent Sangiovese since 1980. What began as a rebellion against the Chianti Classico regulations – the absurd rule of adding white grapes – developed into an icon of pure Sangiovese expression.

“Cepparello” Toscana IGT 2020 · Double MAGNUM in OWC

“Cepparello” Toscana IGT 2021 · Double MAGNUM in OWC

Isole e Olena is located above the picturesque Val d'Elsa in the western part of the Chianti Classico region. The winery was founded in 1956 by the De Marchi family and today belongs to the French EPI group.
Paolo de Marchi, who is rightly nicknamed Mr. Sangiovese, has worked persistently over the past decades to create and refine the conditions for the production of top wines. For the successful producer, the place where quality is decided is the vineyard. In 1976, the studied oenologist settled near the two hamlets of Isole and Olena on his parents' then unprofitable vineyard.
In 2022, Paolo de Marchi trustingly placed his life's work in the hands of the French investor group EPI, which owns, among others, the traditional Brunello wine estate Biondi Santi. The following year, oenologist Emanuele Reolon took over the baton from Paolo. This means that the winery will continue to be in experienced hands in the future: Emanuele studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Udine and gained a lot of experience abroad and in Tuscany. In combination with the careful handover of the vineyards, this is the guarantee that Isole e Olena will continue to emphasise the special features of Tuscan wine culture in its wines with continuity and the usual courage to be independent.
In collaboration with several universities, Isole e Olena has sought out and planted the best clones for its sites. Old vineyard terraces were revived or abandoned in poorer sites, and pruning and tillage were changed. The very short pruning brought great success, and in the meantime the farm reaps higher yields year after year for its meticulous work. What is undisputed here is the great passion for the Sangiovese grape. The winery's Chianti Classico is almost single-vineyard. The large table wine Cepparello consists exclusively of the local top grape variety and is matured in new barriques.
The French grape varieties Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are only grown in small parcels, which Isole e Olena markets as single-varietals under the label "Collezione Privata". They don't believe in oenological gimmicks and exaggerated barrique ageing; the products are not meant to be chic, but interpretations of their grape varieties and terroir. SUPERIORE.DE
"It is wineries like Isole e Olena that embody the identity of Chianti Classico with their wines. I am grateful to these winemakers that they have held on so steadfastly to their traditional wine styles throughout all these years of stylistic confusion. As long as there are still wines like this, I feel that my Chianti love is reciprocated." Andreas März Merum
