In 1987, Paolo De Marchi ventured an experiment that was to become legendary: he grafted Chardonnay vines onto existing vines in the wooded vineyards of Isole e Olena. What began as a bold venture developed into one of the most extraordinary white wines in Tuscany – a silent masterpiece that is also known as "silent wine" due to its low production volume. The 2023 vintage tells the story of a special terroir: the five hectares of vines in the northernmost part of the estate, surrounded by protective forests, create a cooler microclimate that gives the Chardonnay the mineral precision and elegance that distinguishes it from its Tuscan peers. Vines over twenty years old, harvested by hand in the first days of September, form the basis of this rarity. Paolo De Marchi's Burgundian signature is evident in the vinification: fermentation in barriques, followed by ten to twelve months of ageing on the fine lees in French oak barrels – one third new, one third second fill, one third third fill. Regular bâtonnage, initially three times a week, later once a week, gives the wine its silky texture and complex depth.

In the glass, the 2023 shines in a bright lemon yellow colour with greenish reflections. The bouquet unfolds a beguiling symphony of orange blossom and jasmine, underpinned by ripe apricots, quinces and a hint of roasted almonds. Subtle vanilla notes and a fine minerality complete the olfactory kaleidoscope. The true greatness of this cuvée is revealed on the palate: creamy and dense, yet infused with vibrant freshness, the wine combines ripe fruit with salty minerality to create a harmonious whole. The elegant acidity carries aromas of lemon tart and apricots, while the long, slightly buttery finish is characterised by spicy wood notes and a delicate toastiness. A Chardonnay that perfects the Tuscan interpretation of the Burgundian philosophy – a wine for collectors and connoisseurs that will only reveal its true greatness after years of ageing.
