There are moments in the history of Italian viticulture that shine like beacons through time. 1962 was one such moment when Fabrizio Bianchi, driven by a vision and surrounded by the scepticism of his contemporaries, made a decision that would change Chianti Classico forever. He dared to vinify the grapes from a single vineyard separately: Il Poggio. What began as an experiment became a revolution – the first cru of Chianti Classico was born. Il Poggio – "the hill" – lies in the heart of Monsanto like a natural amphitheatre, surrounded by wild cypresses, juniper bushes and strawberry trees. Here, on the characteristic Galestro soils between 280 and 320 metres above sea level, the Sangiovese vines have driven their roots deep into the slate-like rock over the decades. These soils – a gift of geological history – give the wine the mineral depth and structural complexity that have made Il Poggio a living legend.
Deep ruby red with garnet-coloured reflections. The bouquet is initially restrained, then becomes increasingly expressive with aromas of violets, roses and ripe cherries. Underneath are earthy notes of undergrowth, tobacco and that characteristic chalky minerality that tells of the Galestro soils. The palate reveals all the architectural perfection of this exceptional red: medium to full-bodied, supported by a silky structure and elegant, perfectly integrated tannins. The vibrant acidity runs through the wine like a red thread and leads to a final of impressive length – taut, juicy and with a tension that lingers in the memory long after the last sip. A wine of crystalline purity and aristocratic grace. SUPERIORE.DE
"Exciting attack of blackcurrants, rose petals and herbs, cloves and blood oranges; harmonious in the mouth, the tannins fine-grained, the acidity lively, finely tuned salty minerality, the finish noble and extremely long." Vinum
"The first bottling of Chianti Classico in a single vineyard, Il Poggio, has been produced since 1962. It remains an unshakeable icon of the region and a tribute to the foresight of Fabrizio Bianchi. The 2020 develops slowly with aromas of crushed stone, plum blossom and white pepper. It is taut and straightforward on the palate and impresses with wild strawberries and juicy blood oranges. The core is stony and energetic, the angular tannins still need to be harmonised, give it time." Decanter
"A restrained, reductive and transparent wine with aromas of roses, violets, rhubarb and chalky minerality. Supple and medium to full-bodied on the palate, with elegant, velvety tannins and a long, refreshing acidity that is very juicy and dense on the finish. Exciting and polished, with a hint of austerity in the aftertaste. Drinkable now, but best from 2026." James Suckling
"Balsamic aromas lead in, and this red remains on the spicy side, revealing notes of eucalyptus, juniper and wild herbs. There is a core of sweet fruit and an underlying mineral element that develops into an unbearably long and complex aftertaste. Dense tannins and a lively acidity ensure its longevity." Wine Spectator
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Il Poggio is an absolute blast. What a wine. Elegant and translucent, the 2020 impresses with a sublime, refined personality that is impossible to ignore. The fine tannins and elevated, sensual flavours immediately herald a wine of absolute class. On the palate, the 2020 is wonderfully brooding and complex, with a stunning balance and exceptional pedigree. The 2020 is one of the very best Il Poggio ever made. On the two occasions I have tasted it so far, it has been simply breathtaking. Don't miss it!" Vinous
