"Everything was slow, calm and beautiful." This is how cellar master Carlo Paoli described 2013. After an April frost that regulated the natural grape yield, a summer without extremes followed – no heat spike, no stressful events, just a gradual, even ripening that gave the Cabernet Sauvignon on the gravel marl soils of Tenuta San Guido exactly what it needed: Time. Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, granddaughter of the founder, called the result a record year for Sassicaia. The harvest began at the beginning of September with the Cabernet Franc, which was the first to reach phenological ripeness, and ended at the end of September in the high vineyards of Castiglioncello.
Bright ruby red with garnet-coloured nuances. Bouquet of redcurrant, violets, fresh herbs, menthol, mineral slate – with a clarity and transparency that reveals the character of the terroir as if through glass. The flavour is silky and precise at the same time, with the finest tannins, a lively acidity and an unusually long, harmonious finish. "Firm, clear and polished on the nose, complex, noble aroma of red and even more black berries with notes of light cherries, fine floral and herbal aromas, a hint of candy, tobacco nuances, juniper, pepper, finest liquorice and a hint of blood orange. Very noble and fine, polished, juicy fruit with delicate chocolaty nuances, reminiscent of mountain herbs and very fine herbal flavours as well as a hint of pink pepper and mint, persistent and dense on the palate, yet highly elegant, very fine, lively acidity and first-class tannins, persistent, deep and multi-layered, well-drawn, salty in the background, hints of citrus zest, still completely undeveloped, but already beguiling, based much more on finesse than on power, even if it is not a real lightweight, long, multi-layered, downright beguiling finish."
