Ten years. With the 2020 vintage, Appius is celebrating its first decade – and what a decade it has been. When Hans Terzer first bottled his dream wine in 2010, he had already been nurturing the idea for a long time. During his walks through the vineyards, he had noticed that certain low-yielding old vines in the historic vineyards of Eppan produced a quality that demanded its own distinct identity – something distinct from the celebrated Sanct-Valentin range. Originally, the wine was to be called "Oans" – Piedmontese for "one" – but the name was already taken. So it became Appius: the Roman name for Eppan, derived from Appianum, the "estate of Appius".

Hans Terzer, cellar master since 1977 and named one of the world's ten best winemakers by Gambero Rosso in 1997, has created his own personal statement with the Appius. The cuvée blends 60% Chardonnay with Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc – each variety fermented and matured separately in small oak barrels. After twelve months in oak, the wines are blended, followed by a further three years’ maturation on the fine lees in steel tanks. The Appius does not leave the cellar until four years after the harvest. The 2020 vintage was produced from a challenging harvest – and demonstrates precisely the resilience that also characterises the winery.

An intense Chartreuse yellow with greenish highlights, a bouquet of kiwi, pineapple, peach and plum, interwoven with notes of toasted hazelnuts and cloves. On the palate: great freshness, vibrant liveliness and an aromatic finish reminiscent of Alpine herbs, stinging nettle and mint. Every year, the Appius is given a new label design – the 2020 vintage features golden geometric shapes on a textured background. A collector's item, limited to just a few thousand bottles.
