St. Magdalener Classico Alto Adige DOC 2024
The eponymous hill of St. Magdalena in the north of Bolzano gives this authentic South Tyrolean classic its unmistakable character. The autochthonous Vernatsch and Lagrein grape varieties grow harmoniously side by side on the loose moraine debris soils of the historic vineyards of St. Magdalena, St. Justina and Leitach between 200-500 metres above sea level – a symbiosis that has epitomised the essence of South Tyrolean viticulture for centuries. The traditional cuvée benefits from the ideal climatic conditions of the protected slopes above Bolzano, where warm days and cool nights give the grapes their characteristic balance between fruitiness and elegance. The geological composition of the glacial debris soils ensures optimum drainage and gives the wine its typical mineral structure.

This characterful Müller Thurgau, which embodies the cool elegance of South Tyrol's north-easternmost growing region, comes from the high vineyards at the beginning of the Eisack Valley and on the Ritten at an altitude of 600-700 metres. Dellago comes from Pinot Bianco parcels personally selected by cellar master Stephan Filippi on characteristic porphyry and limestone soils, where Archduke Johann of Austria established Pinot Blanc in South Tyrol as early as 1850. The special terroir with its distinctive temperature fluctuations between warm days and cool nights gives the hand-picked grapes the mineral precision that characterises Dellago. After careful manual harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and vinified in two parts: The majority matures traditionally in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees, while a small but decisive proportion undergoes alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation in French barriques – a subtle use of wood gives the wine additional structure and complexity without overpowering its Burgundian elegance.

The cooperative's latest achievement: Stieler Pinot Grigio comes from hand-picked hillside vineyards on the Ritten between 500 and 600 metres, where vines over 25 years old put all their experience into the grapes. When developing the Cuvée TAL, cellar master Filippi recognised the extraordinary potential of these Ritten vineyards and created a unique single-vineyard wine from them. Gentle whole-cluster pressing and six months of ageing on the fine lees in large oak barrels give this Pinot Gris its characteristic complexity.

!["Laven" Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2023 (BIO)]()
“Laven” Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2023 (BIO)
The porphyry soils on which the vines for the successful cooperative winery's first organic wine are grown are of volcanic origin, and the former lava flows gave the elegant, fresh wine its name. It is a perfectly successful symbiosis of the organic origins of the Bolzano region and the contemporary high standards of fresh and crisp South Tyrolean white wines. Bright straw yellow in colour with greenish reflections. Full bouquet of ripe apple, peach and hints of tropical fruit. Firm, precise and well-structured on the palate, its pleasant acidity carries it into a remarkable finish. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Mock" Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2024]()
“Mock” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2024
The legendary Mockhof is enthroned high above Bolzano – a single vineyard site that offers Sauvignon Bianco perfect conditions for its development. Situated at an altitude of 500 metres on steep porphyry slopes, the vines benefit from extreme daytime temperatures and cool nights, which allow for exceptionally slow ripening. This exposed location is one of the latest harvesting areas in South Tyrol – a circumstance that gives the Mock its characteristic aromatic complexity. Cellar master Stephan Filippi vinifies this single-vineyard wine with the utmost care: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation and maturation exclusively in stainless steel preserve the intensity typical of the grape variety.

!["Collection Otto Graf Huyn" Cabernet Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2022]()
“Collection Otto Graf Huyn” Cabernet Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2022
Count Otto Huyn (1927-1998) embodied the last splendour of the traditional South Tyrolean aristocracy – a nobleman from Eberstein in Carinthia, who owned his best vineyards in Siebeneich near Terlan, thus continuing a centuries-old winemaking tradition of the Tyrolean aristocracy. His privileged plots at an altitude of 250-300 metres, characterised by weathered porphyry soils of volcanic origin, were already considered the crown jewels of South Tyrolean viticulture during his lifetime. The Bolzano winery honours this heritage with its Collection Otto Graf Huyn, a selection that comes exclusively from the top vineyards of the historic estate, personally selected by the cellar master. The unique terroir of Siebeneich, where warm, sun-exposed slopes meet the nutrient-rich weathered soils of the Bolzano porphyry, creates ideal conditions for Bordeaux grape varieties. The cuvée of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc benefits from the continental character of this location: warm days and cool nights give the grapes the concentration and finesse that characterise this Riserva.

!["Collection Otto Graf Huyn" Merlot Alto Adige DOC 2021]()
“Collection Otto Graf Huyn” Merlot Alto Adige DOC 2021
The "Collection" line is made from late-harvested grapes from selected, sun-drenched vineyards and stands for complex, straightforward wines that emphasise the terroir. The Comrades' vineyards are located in Siebeneich and Bolzano at 300 metres above sea level and offer ideal conditions for this wonderful Merlot to thrive. Dark ruby to garnet red in colour. Exuberant aromas of blackberry and wild berries, complemented by a refined spice component. On the palate, it is elegant, delicately fruity, almost polished. This Merlot is not at all plump like so many representatives of this grape variety - it is medium-bodied, finely accentuated and leads into a respectable finish with fine-pored tannins. SUPERIORE.DE

Things are happening in Bolzano. The whole city seems to be on the move. With the new Bolzano Winery, it now also has a new landmark. Visible from afar, the cube with the stylised bronze-coloured wine leaf towers above the mountains in the north of South Tyrol's capital.
Most of the winery, however, was built underground into the mountainside and the roof was planted with PIWI vines in terraces. The huge cellar thus blends almost invisibly into the landscape. The people of Bolzano already call it "the cellar in the vineyard". Around 20,000 square metres on four floors now offer enough space for the impressively diverse range of almost 40 different wine specialities. Because variety has always been the speciality of South Tyrolean winegrowers. Especially at the Cantina Bolzano with its approx. 220 members, who proudly call themselves winegrowers.
On a patchwork of hundreds of plots with a wide variety of soils, they carefully cultivate their vines in a sustainable and natural way. The variety of soils ranges from fertile glacial moraine gravel, which was washed out of the Dolomites by the rivers Etsch, Eisack and Talfer over centuries, to volcanic porphyry in a wide variety of micro-climates. Some of them also in organic farming. More than 350 hectares in total. This makes the Cantina Bolzano one of the largest wine cooperatives in South Tyrol and, at the same time, one of the top winegrowing companies in Italy for many years.
It all began in 1908, when a handful of winegrowers from the municipality of Gries joined forces to cultivate and market Lagrein, the grape variety most commonly grown in the Etsch Valley. Then in 1930, eighteen winegrowers around the St. Magdalenerberg founded another winegrowers' cooperative whose goal was to make the St. Magdalener wine made from Eisacktaler Vernatsch better known. In 2001, the two small cooperatives merged to form the "Cantina di Bolzano". To this day, the best sites are largely distributed between these two areas. This is why the Cantina Bolzano is known far beyond South Tyrol for its award-winning St. Magdalener and Lagrein wines.
In addition, there is also a variety of excellent white wines. Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon bianco, Chardonnay, Goldmuskateller and many other elegant and mineral specialities from 15 different grape varieties, ranging from inexpensive entry-level wines to the wonderful single-vineyard wines that sometimes come from dizzyingly high altitudes, as some plots are located at almost 900 metres above sea level.
Names such as Taber Riserva, Huck am Bach, Moar, Mockhof or Otto Graf Huyn make the hearts of many wine lovers beat faster. They win awards practically every year. At home and abroad. Oenologist Stephan Filippi and his team are responsible for these successes.
It is exciting to see what else will be possible now, as Filippi now has space for the first time to develop each grape delivery from the many vineyards in even more detail and with greater care. In the new cellar, which, by the way, was built according to the "climate house standard" - with solar panels, heat pumps and shading as well as natural cooling in the mountain - gravity is used on the four floors. This eliminates most mechanical processes such as pumping, because grapes and musts are processed most gently in the natural flow. There are suitable steel tanks or barrels for each of the vineyards and wines. Perfectionist Stephan Filippi can rejoice. And so can we wine lovers. SUPERIORE.DE
