“Le Orme” Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2022
The grapes for Chiarlo's classic come from various vineyards in southern Asti, in particular from the Podere La Court and Montemareto vineyards in Castelnuovo Calcea, La Serra in Montaldo Scarampi and Costa delle Monache in Agliano. Le Orme is the prototype of a young, fresh red with a clean fruit flavour of plum and blackberry. On the palate, the wine is flavoured with high-toned red cherries and raspberries, framed by elegant and fine tannins with perfect acidity on the finish. A Barbera full of character that offers great drinking pleasure. SUPERIORE.DE

Michele Chiarlos Principe is a red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes from two highly symbolic growing regions, Roero and Barbaresco. Subtle and intense at the same time, it has a character that tends towards a more drinkable profile, while retaining the elegance and structure typical of the grape variety. Bright ruby red colour. Enchanting nose of sour cherries, plums, but also gingerbread spice and some dried meat as well as cold smoke and mocha. On the palate, notes of violets and red fruit with a delicate spice vein. !["Montemareto" Barbera Nizza DOCG 2021]()
“Montemareto” Barbera Nizza DOCG 2021
In the rolling hills of Castelnuovo Calcea lies the Montemareto vineyard, a privileged parcel in the heart of the Nice DOCG zone, where Michele Chiarlo has relied on old, low-yielding Barbera vines for decades. The 2021 vintage benefited from a balanced vegetation cycle: a mild spring, warm, dry summer months and cool September nights resulted in perfectly ripe, concentrated berries. A deep ruby red colour with violet hues shines in the glass. The bouquet opens with juicy black cherry, ripe plums and dark berries, underpinned by violets, liquorice and fine roasted aromas. On the palate, the Barbera is powerful and supple at the same time, with rich fruit, present but well-integrated acidity and a fine-grained tannin that lends structure. The long, harmonious finish carries notes of sweet tobacco, herbs and a subtle almond flavour. A Barbera wine of remarkable depth and balance – full of character, storable and a worthy ambassador of the Nice terroir. SUPERIORE.DE

![Barbaresco Reyna DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Reyna DOCG 2021
The vineyards of the Reyna site in the hills of Neive and Barbaresco benefit from an ideal south-east to south-west exposure and reddish limestone marl, which is loosened up by sandy inclusions. The grapes are deliberately harvested late in order to achieve optimum physiological ripeness. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures for around 18 months in large Allier and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a resting period in the bottle. The 2021 vintage was characterised by a warm, stable summer and cool nights during the ageing phase, which ensured impressive aromatic precision and a taut structure.

Tortoniano Barolo is a blend of Nebbiolo, 50% of which comes from the Cerequio vineyard, the other half from other plots, including some plantings in the Novello commune. It combines the complexity and nuances of the Nebbiolo grape with a fruit-driven and engaging personality. The aromatic bouquet shows hints of sweetness and richness with a potpourri of blackberries, summer cherries and spices. On the palate it is powerful and immediate, the tannins are clear and tangible. Will continue to develop towards perfection, elegance and finesse over the next few years. SUPERIORE.DE

“La Court” Barbera Nizza Riserva DOCG 2021
La Court is the centrepiece of the Nizza area and one of the iconic sites of Barbera. On the gentle hills between Castelnuovo Calcea and Mombercelli lie two historic parcels with ideal south and south-west exposure on calcareous marl soil characterised by fine sand inclusions. The vines, some of which are over 50 years old, naturally produce low yields with remarkable concentration. 2021 offered ideal conditions: a warm summer with sufficient temperature differences between day and night, followed by a precise harvest in perfect physiological ripeness. After temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, the wine matures for at least 18 months in 700-litre Liters and large barrels before coming to rest in the bottle.

The loose, sandy soils of Cannubi always ensure a special concentration of flavour, and this is particularly evident in this classic vintage. Barolo Cerequio DOCG 2019
Cerequio is considered one of the grand cru sites of Barolo and has been an integral part of the Michele Chiarlo icons for decades. The steep slopes between La Morra and Barolo face south-east and south-west, with calcareous marl and fine veins of sand that give the Nebbiolo here an unmistakable combination of depth, finesse and flavour. The vines, some of which are over 30 years old, produce wines of remarkable complexity in mature vintages. The 2019 vintage was characterised by a balanced vegetation cycle: a cool spring, followed by warm, sunny summer months and moderate temperatures in September, which allowed for slow, complete ripening. Barolo Cerequio Riserva DOCG 2016
This is a special Riserva from Michele Chiarlo that is late to the market. The Barolo Riserva Cerequio is a great wine, with particularly taut tannins and a concentrated richness that permeates its substantial textile fibre. The flavours of dark fruits such as blackberries and dried cherries are accompanied by spices, leather, tar and ashes from the bonfire. The wine shows the concentration and density of long oak ageing with tannins that definitely need more ageing before this exceptional wine will fully convince its connoisseurs! SUPERIORE.DE

The founder of the winery, Michele Chiarlo, completed his oenology studies in Alba in 1955, which his father Pietro only allowed him to do on one condition: "I had to promise my father that I would pass every exam," the winemaker recalled with a grin in an earlier conversation. But thanks to his talent, he was soon at the top of his class and studied with the future protagonists of the Italian wine world, including Giacomo Tachis, the creator of the legendary Supertuscan Sassicaia.
After graduating, the ambitious Michele began to put his plans into practice. He planted his first vineyards between the hills of the Langhe and Monferrato and produced his first Barolo at the end of the 1950s. Thanks to his negotiating skills and his persistent pursuit of quality, he even acquired some of the best vineyards in Piedmont for his production of Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera d'Asti in the following years.
It is not only since the death of Michele Chiarlo (†2023) that the founder's two sons have been responsible for the excellent qualities of the company. Alberto and Stefano, who took over a large part of the company's responsibilities back in the 1990s, are fortunate to have shared a long and eventful life with their father and are continuing the legacy of the "father of Barbera d'Asti and Moscato" with great passion. Michele's legacy is therefore in the best of hands.
The winery has a particular fondness for indigenous grape varieties - above all the Barbera grape, which used to be greatly underestimated by many producers. Before Michele experimented with this unique grape variety, Barbera was primarily known as a rustic table wine. Chiarlo drew inspiration for a finer style of wine from Burgundy and pressed his first fruity and velvety Barbera in 1974 with the help of malolactic fermentation. Enthusiastic work and the pursuit of excellence earned the grape variety the title "Queen of Piedmontese wines" and today the winery produces a range of outstanding Barbera d'Asti.
The quality level of the top category Nizza DOCG is comparable to that of Barbaresco and Barolo, which are regularly honoured by the trade press. Michele Chiarlo also produces wonderfully fruity white wines such as Gavi di Gavi and Roero Arneis as well as fruity, sparkling Moscato d'Asti with a wonderfully balanced residual sweetness.
From sustainable work in the vineyard to a CO₂-friendly supply chain, the winery is a flagship for the region. We are certain that the next generation will ensure that the Michele Chiarlo winery remains one of the best in Piedmont. SUPERIORE.DE
