Sotto Casa – in the truest sense of the word: the single vineyard of the same name lies directly next to the winery, on stony alluvial soil – the most intimate vineyard on the entire estate and the only one from which Boscarelli combines international grape varieties with Prugnolo Gentile. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and a tannic frame, a small proportion of Merlot gives fullness and softness – sangiovese remains the soul. The three varieties are harvested separately, fermented separately – in oak vats with natural yeasts for around 10 days at controlled temperatures. Each cuvée then matures separately in Slavonia and Allier oak between 3 and 30 hectolitres, depending on the varietal character. Blending only takes place at the end of the 28 to 32 months of maturation.
Deep, bright ruby red colour. Cherries, spices and delicate wild berries on the nose – inviting and complex. Powerful and youthfully dense on the palate, with a silky texture, an abundance of tart wild berries, spices and mineral depth. The final shows the muscles of the wine – structured, enveloping the entire palate, with a lively acidity as a counterweight. The Sotto Casa is Boscarelli's most personal statement about Montepulciano. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby-coloured core with a brightening rim. Powerful, savoury bouquet of fleshy cherries and plums, with leather, coffee and Mediterranean herbs on the finish. On the palate, invigorating acidity and velvety tannins carry the ripe fruit core, balanced through to the lingering finish." Falstaff
"The 2021 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sotto Casa is darkly furled. Aromas of crushed ashen stone and dried herbs complicate black cherries and exotic spice. The deeply textural but cooling palate offers perfumed wild berry fruits and a mounting mineral tension toward the close. Hints of wild blueberry and a citrus twang linger on the long, gently tannic finish." Vinous
"Ripe and supple, this red boasts macerated cherry, plum, Tuscan scrub, iron and tobacco flavors. Linear in profile, with flashes of orange peel, leather and earth on the extensive aftertaste. Offers terrific balance and potential for aging." Wine Spectator
"This deep, intense wine shows cassis and incense, slightly leafy black cherries and fresh violets. Full-bodied on the palate, it is firm yet supple with tension, great fruit concentration and grainy yet sweet tannins. A bit warming in the finish." James Suckling
"A layered, profound nose rolls from just poured tar, crushed rocks and wild herbs, to old leather, book bindings, rose water and citrus peel. The dark palate broods with macerated berries and earth, but glimmers of light and warmth come from flaky Maldon salt and more citrus peels. Tannins form an ultra-refined mosaic." Wine Enthusiast
