Pieve refers to the old ecclesiastical administrative units of medieval Tuscany, the hubs around which rural life was organised long before modern appellations existed. The Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has taken these historical toponyms as the basis for twelve Unità Geografiche Aggiuntive – the UGA system, which officially came into force in February 2025. The 2021 vintage is the first to be allowed to bear this designation. Boscarelli has been based in Cervognano since 1962 – one of the twelve Pievi, named after the Romanesque Pieve di Sant'Albino, which has defined the area for centuries.

The Costa Grande parcel is the historic core of the vineyard: calcareous sandy soils with silt, clay and mineral skeleton, which varies depending on the location, at an altitude of 280 to 350 metres. Only indigenous grape varieties – prugnolo Gentile as the foundation, Canaiolo as the complement – from vines that have grown on this soil for decades and know it with every root.

2021 was a classic, balanced vintage in Montepulciano. The Costa Grande proved to be one of the most convincing first vintages of the new Pieve system in the Consorzio's assessment: "elegant and brooding" – a precise description for a wine that does not show its depth out loud. Deep ruby red colour. Cherry, marasca, dried rose, spices, a hint of earth and minerality on the nose – complex, layered, of great calm. Elegant and balanced on the palate, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, spicy final.
