When Giovanni Massolino founded his winery in Serralunga d'Alba in 1896, he was the first to bring electric light to the village. A pioneer. His grandson Giuseppe, co-founder of the legendary Barolo consortium, continued this tradition – and then came the third generation, Giovanni, Camilla and Renato: they wrote a new chapter in 1985 by bottling Margheria separately for the first time. Today, the brothers Franco and Roberto continue the legacy. Both Oenologistwho understand that great wines are not made, but born. Margheria is located on the western edge of Serralunga's famous ridge, just a stone's throw away from the mythical Vigna Rionda – and yet it is its exact opposite. Where Vigna Rionda promises strength and eternity with its calcareous marl, the Margheria site at 280 metres above sea level plays with a higher admixture of sand in the limestone soil. The result: elegance meets structure, floral notes meet mineral depth. Serralunga shows its accessible side here without sacrificing its typical longevity.
One and a half hectares only. Forty-year-old vines in the Guyot system. Long maceration in oak vats at 30 degrees, followed by thirty months of ageing in large Slavonian barrels – and finally a year in the dark in the bottle. Pure tradition. Intense garnet red colour, ethereal aromas of tobacco, undergrowth and spices, with pronounced mineral notes. The palate reveals classic harmony, with youthful, taut tannins and the unmistakable Nebbiolo character that has made Serralunga a legend. A wine that already impresses today – and will have even more to tell in fifteen years' time. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Barolo DOCG Margheria comes from the calcareous soil with a slightly higher proportion of sand than in our other sub-areas, which has a strong influence on its character. It was produced for the first time in 1985 and has great ageing potential. The grapes come from our vineyard in the MGA Margheria in Serralunga d'Alba." Franco Massolino
"Brilliant garnet red with a brightening rim. Delicate and finely characterised on the nose with notes of pomegranate, rose petals and mineral hints. More open on the palate, beautiful fruit melt meets velvety tannin, youthful, but with a lot of potential." Falstaff
"The Barolo Margheria 2021 is a lively, dynamic young Barolo. Gravel, slate, white pepper, orange peel and red-coloured fruit are all beautifully delineated. This is a particularly lively wine for Margheria. Although I appreciate its energy, the 2021 is very light and also quite a stylistic departure from the past." Vinous
"It has beautiful aromas of blueberries, pine resin, orange peel and a hint of lavender. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with supple tannins in the context of the vintage. It has a seductive, delicate, well-integrated fruit profile that makes it very attractive." James Suckling
"The Barolo Margheria 2021 draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba. It reveals aromas of wild berries and wild cherries with candied oranges, flint and crushed granite. I also find roasted aniseed in the background. The team at Massolino has done a great job of getting to grips with the tannins, which feel very silky and long, leaving a shiny sheen on the finish."
