The Rosso di Montalcino comes from slightly younger Brunello vines and is matured for 12 months in large oak barrels. It undoubtedly bears the signature of the top winery Biondi Santi: delicately sweet, open flavours of red berries, flowers and cloves. Like all of the winery's other wines, the Rosso is classic and firm in style, with a bombastic structure and a brilliant, long finish. Medium-light ruby red colour. Very open and graceful nose of red fruits, violets, tobacco, rose petals and some thyme. Full and juicy on the palate, with a beautiful finish and subtle extract sweetness, expansively harmonious with a pleasant freshness and hints of pomegranate, pepper and sour cherry. Energy and elegance are the hallmarks of the 2013 Brunello vintage. The top wines are stunning, with a vibrancy that is missing in many of the muscular, approachable and higher alcohol Brunellos from recent vintages. However, the 2013s will also require some patience to reach their maximum potential. In contrast to the extremely warm, dry years that have become the norm in Montalcino since the mid-1990s (the exceptions being 1998, 2002 and 2005), the 2013 vintage was a reminiscence of the past. It was a cool year with lots of rain in spring and the first half of summer.

With time, the wine is magnificent and focused, with a very direct and impressive presentation of its aromas. The wine leaves a lasting impression in the mouth, thanks to the textural tautness of its tannins and the refreshing crispness of the acidity, finally showing more power, volume and persistence than expected on the long final. The Riserva – produced only 43 times in 137 years – embodies not just a wine, but a philosophy: the conviction that Sangiovese Grosso, in the hands of patience, precision and uncompromising tradition, can become one of the world's longest-lived growths. The 2018 vintage marks a special moment: it is the first Riserva under the new era, led by CEO Giampiero Bertolini and Technical Director Federico Radi, who have been continuing the legacy with the credo "evolution, not revolution" since 2017.

In 1888, Ferruccio Biondi Santi created the famous Brunello di Montalcino, modelled on the Barolo of the time, out of a brilliant intuition. This was a revolution, as in the rest of Tuscany no wine was made from a single grape variety. Founded by Ferruccio's grandfather Clemente Biondi Santi in 1840, the traditional Il Greppo winery, located south-east of Montalcino, has long been recognised as a magical place. Even older vintages from the estate are among the jewels of Italian viticulture. Stylistically perfect elegance with a restrained acidity when young - these are the characteristics that allow these fine wines to age beautifully.
The estate remained the only bottler of Brunello until the 1950s. When a boom began in the 1980s, the wines were almost forgotten for decades due to the large number of new interpretations of the old wine. But at the beginning of the new millennium, Tenuta Il Greppo returned to its old form. Hardly any other winery stands for its traditional, independent style as consistently as Biondi-Santi.
Only Sangiovese Grosso di Montalcino saplings are used in the vineyards. The grapes are selected according to criteria based on the results of in-house analyses. In the estate's cellar, huge and very old barrels stand next to ten or 40 hectolitre containers, some of which are new. Important to know: The winery is one of the few Brunello producers to offer the special service of ricolmatura (re-bottling), whereby the very best vintages are re-bottled and re-corked after ten years or more.
The passion and care with which they dedicate themselves to the production of an outstanding traditional Brunello remain unbroken to this day. Until 2017, the winery was managed by Jacopo Biondi Santi after his father Franco, great-grandson of Ferruccio and a fascinating personality with a distinguished demeanour, died in 2013 at the age of 91. Biondi Santi has been wholly owned by Christopher Descours' French EPI Group since 2023; this group of investors includes the traditional Chianti Classico winery Isole e Olena.
Federico Radi has been part of Biondi-Santi since 2017 and has taken on the challenge of carrying the legacy of Biondi-Santi into the future. He is deeply immersed in the centuries-old winemaking tradition and also sees himself as the guardian of the vineyards from which Brunello di Montalcino originates. The Biondi Santi legend will therefore endure for a long time to come, as it is inextricably linked to the history of Brunello di Montalcino. SUPERIORE.DE
