In the vineyards of Rancia Piccola and Poggiolo, where a Benedictine monastery once watched over the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, a quiet revolution has been taking place since 1987. Maestro Raro – the rare master – bears the name of the legendary vineyard parcel, also known as "Mastro Raro", which neighbours the famous Rancia vineyard. Here, the Poggiali family dared to do the seemingly impossible: to breathe the terroir of Fèlsina into the world-famous Cabernet Sauvignon, that magical place where normally only Sangiovese performs at its best.

Since the mid-1980s, Fèlsina has carried out meticulous research to identify the most suitable clones and realised the new plantings between 1990 and the early 2000s. 5,400 vines per hectare, trained in the simple Guyot with 5-8 eyes, are rooted in the south-eastern terroir of Chianti Classico, where calcareous Alberese and sandstone form the perfect stage for international grape varieties. While other producers "modernised" their Chianti vineyards with international varieties, Fèlsina remained true to Sangiovese with Fontalloro and Rancia and created an independent masterpiece with Maestro Raro. Intense ruby red colour with violet hues. Blackcurrants, cranberries, pencil shavings and black pepper on the nose. "The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Maestro Raro shows plenty of depth with black fruits and a minty or balsamic note in the background. It is powerful, but the wine never feels heavy. In fact, it is quite graceful and rather slender, especially considering the hot growing season. Blackcurrant, cranberry, sour orange, pencil shavings and black pepper emerge on the nose.
