The name Il Bruciato, literally "the fire", commemorates a historic forest fire disaster on the Guado al Tasso estate: At the beginning of the 20th century, an extensive area of woodland on the estate was completely destroyed by fire. Since then, the wine has poetically recounted this event – and the reconstruction, which also symbolises perseverance, identity and the connection between landscape and wine. Since its debut vintage in 2002, Guado al Tasso has been pursuing the idea of an accessible red Bolgheri wine that is nevertheless true to its origins and terroir. The vines grow in the immediate neighbourhood of the Bolgheri Superiore, and the wine is vinified with precision and an eye for balance.

The name Cont'Ugo refers to a Tuscan nobleman named Ugo della Gherardesca, whose family has been linked to the Bolgheri area for centuries. It symbolises the aristocratic character of the Maremma, which can still be felt today in combination with the wild coastal landscape. For Marchese Antinori, owner of the Guado al Tasso winery, the name is a tribute to origin and character: noble, independent and deeply rooted. The 2022 vintage of this single-varietal Merlot comes from high-altitude, well-aerated plots with loamy soils and is matured for 12 months in French oak, partly new and partly used.

San Walfredo – a Merlot that breathes history. Named after the Antinori family saint, this Bolgheri Superiore not only stands for excellence, but also for a conscious pause in the flow of modernity. The grapes come from a single plot, from an old, gravel-rich strip of alluvial soil near the sea. The combination of intense sunshine, good aeration and broodingsoils produces grapes of rare concentration and balance. The 2019 vintage got off to a cool start with late budding and an ideal growing season. September brought warm days and cool nights – perfect conditions for a balance of ripeness and freshness. The grapes were harvested exclusively by hand, plot by plot. Fermentation took place in conical stainless steel tanks, with a long maceration period, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French barriques and subsequent rest in the bottle.

“Matarocchio” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2019
Matarocchio - a pure Cabernet Franc produced by the Antinori family in a limited edition - is a wine that leaves an overwhelming first, second, third and so on impression. This wonderful and detailed wine is an unforgettable experience, especially for those who are drawn to the irresistible flavours of sun-drenched coastal Tuscany. The fruit comes from a five-hectare plot with well-drained soils and white stones. The vines were planted at the end of the 1990s at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare. The rows of vines are orientated so that they are exposed to the evening breezes that blow in from the beach, and the vines benefit from the strong diurnal temperature fluctuations. Matarocchio represents a crown in the very impressive pyramid of iconic Antinori wines (including Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso). To date, it has only been produced in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016.

Guado al Tasso presents itself with a warm-toned bouquet and an abundance of fruit that is just as convincing as its harmonious structure. Deep, dark, rich ruby-purple colour. Very clear and intense nose, with aromas of blackberries, cassis and dark cherries, underpinned by fine, spicy notes with hints of white pepper and leather. Very juicy on the attack and on the palate, with plenty of sweet flavour, elegant tannins and a very long finish. A finesse-rich red that offers maximum drinking pleasure and great ageing potential. San Walfredo – a Merlot that breathes history. Named after the Antinori family saint, this Bolgheri Superiore not only stands for excellence, but also for a conscious pause in the flow of modernity. The grapes come from a single plot, from an old, gravel-rich strip of alluvial soil near the sea. The combination of intense sunshine, good aeration and broodingsoils produces grapes of rare concentration and balance. The 2019 vintage got off to a cool start with late budding and an ideal growing season. September brought warm days and cool nights – perfect conditions for a balance of ripeness and freshness. The grapes were harvested exclusively by hand, plot by plot. Fermentation took place in conical stainless steel tanks, with a long maceration period, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French barriques and subsequent rest in the bottle.

Before it was transferred to the famous Antinori winegrowing family by inheritance in 1830, the Tenuta Guado al Tasso was owned by the noble della Gherardesca family. They had already started making wine in Bolgheri in the second half of the 17th century. It was mainly thanks to Guido Alberto della Gherardesca that decisive changes in viticulture were introduced on the estate even then. The magnificent estate of more than a thousand hectares is located in the Bolgheri amphitheatre. It is surrounded by an idyllic natural landscape consisting of 300 hectares of vineyards, woods, olive groves, typical Mediterranean flora and fields of sunflowers and cereals. On the hills, which are only 45 to 65 metres high, the Mediterranean climate ensures balanced growing conditions all year round - an ideal prerequisite for early-ripening grape varieties.
No other winery in the Bolgheri region can boast as many vines as Guado al Tasso. In addition to the local Sangiovese, the international varieties Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah and Petit Verdot are cultivated. Vermentino, Maremma's most famous white variety, is another important part of the vine portfolio. The grape harvest usually begins at the end of August, around two weeks earlier than in the Tuscan growing areas further away from the coast.
It is thanks to the Antinori family's investments that the vineyards and cellar are able to fulfil the highest standards. At the same time, Piero Antinori, probably the most brilliant and prudent entrepreneur on the Italian winegrowing scene, has recognisably strengthened the reputation of the Bolgheri denomination with his branch. The prominent estate owner is also supported by three very competent daughters, Renzo Cotarella as general manager and Oenologist. The winery also benefits from a great team of managers, technicians and vineyard workers who are always very committed to ensuring that the truly remarkable quality standard of the Antinori wine dynasty is maintained in the future.
The modern-style wines from Tenuta Guado al Tasso all have an impeccably clear profile and are characterised by their perfect fruit ripeness. New wooden barrels are favoured for ageing these fine wines in the cellar. For years, the Bolgheri Rosso Superiore Guado al Tasso has been the centrepiece of the estate's range, alongside the single-varietal Merlot Cont'Ugo and the single-varietal Cabernet Franc Matarocchio, which is only produced in the very best years. The Bolgheri Rosso Bruciato stands in contrast to these top wines and, although it falls below them in terms of style, complexity and price, it also reveals the winery's signature style. SUPERIORE.DE
