The Nerello Mascalese vines for the Archineri Rosso are rooted deep in the terraced vineyards of Contrada Rampante – at an altitude of around 850 metres on pure volcanic rock. It is a barren, yet vital terroir which, in combination with old, ungrafted vines and strict selection, produces wines of almost ascetic precision. The grapes are fermented spontaneously, then matured for around 12 months in large, used oak barrels before being bottled without filtration.
A transparent, cool ruby red colour with a garnet red core in the glass. The aroma is taut and multi-layered: sour cherry, raspberry, blood orange, dried herbs, crushed rose petals and a fine note of volcanic ash. No excessive wood, no opulence – instead clarity, herbal spice and salty depth. Cool, precise and straightforward on the palate. The tannins are fine but present, the acidity lively and supportive, the body sinewy, never broad. The long finish again reveals herbs, stone and a subtle hint of smoke – all in a calm balance. Archineri Rosso is an Etna wine with an almost Burgundian style – not loud, not muscular, but focussed, elegant and with great precision of origin. Anyone who wants to listen to Etna will find one of its clearest interpreters here. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light, bright ruby red colour. Elegant, appealing nose, delicate fruit, cherry and raspberry, some liquorice in the background. Delicate and juicy on the palate, vibrant acidity, gripping tannins, mouth-watering final." Falstaff
"This acidic wine from old vines in Contrada Rampante at 800 metres above sea level is streamlined and energetic, intense with tangy red berries and blackberries. A hint of earth and spice lingers, while the finish is all perfume. Delicious." Decanter
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Archineri is firmly wrapped up in its youthful state. Dusty rose and raspberry flavours are complicated by hints of ash and floral underbrush. This wine is dense and complex, with silky texture and an abundance of tart wild berry flavours carried by tantalising acidity. Incredibly savoury and long, the 2021 leaves a layer of fine tannins and an aftertaste of sour cranberry as a hint of liquorice fades." Vinous
"Bright ruby-garnet colour, with earthy strawberry, dried flowers and cinnamon. It has a pinot-like elegance, depth and complexity. A soulful palate with velvety tannins that are a little chalky on the finish, crisp, long, integrated acidity and an amazing finish. Medium to full body with flavours of cherry stones. More elegant than powerful." James Suckling
"The Etna Rosso Archineri 2021 is made from fruit from old vines with their own roots on the north side of Mount Etna in an area with particularly powdery volcanic ash. This vintage delivers a very concentrated fruit quality that appears particularly fresh and finishes with a certain acidity. There is tart cherry and cassis with a hint of rose and blue flower. Pietradolce has highly functional and technological wines where no expense is spared. The 2021s are super precise." Wine Advocate
