There are wines that define a family across generations, and there are those moments when a winemaker gives his life's work a name that connects the past and the future. When Luciano Sandrone decided to rename his legendary Barolo Cannubi Boschis in 2013, he did not choose just any name, but created an acronym from the first names of his grandchildren: ALEssia and STEfano. ALESTE – a word that embodies experience, continuity and the hope that what he started in 1985 with the first bottle of Cannubi Boschis will continue in the hands of the next generation. Cannubi Boschis, the sub-vineyard at the heart of the mythical Cannubi vineyard in Barolo, is the vineyard in which Luciano invested all his savings in 1977 – directly opposite the winery, on a hill whose potential he recognised from the very first moment. Here, on optimal soils in a sheltered, sun-drenched location, Nebbiolo grows into the combination of power and finesse that has made Cannubi famous worldwide.
The 2021 vintage is considered almost perfect in Piedmont – a year in which the climatic conditions allowed Nebbiolo to develop its full aromatic maturity without sacrificing structure and elegance. Rich, bright ruby red in colour with fine garnet reflections. The nose is initially reserved, almost introverted, but then opens up to fascinating aromas of sandalwood, ripe cherries, truffles, fresh leather and dried violets. Notes of orange peel, liquorice and a hint of Parma violets lend additional complexity to the bouquet. On the palate, the Aleste 2021 shows all its greatness: supple with a lively acidity that gives the wine tension, mouth-watering mineral accents and a noble, muscular tannin structure. The texture is velvety, the tannins finely honed and yet powerful – the sweet ripeness that characterises great vintages and makes the wine enjoyable even now, although it has decades of development ahead of it. The final is long and delicate on the palate with flavours of dried flowers, orange and a persistent minerality. A Barolo of exceptional elegance and depth that could not embody Luciano's legacy any better. SUPERIORE.DE
"Brilliant, intense ruby colour with a slight garnet sheen. Presents itself with notes of raspberry and ripe plum, with fine spicy-earthy tones in the background. Fills the palate full, shows lots of fine raspberry fruit, then opens up with precisely placed tannins, very good tension, rich pressure on the final, lingers for a long time." Falstaff
"This is a wine that bridges classical and contemporary Barolo. Like a perfectly tailored Italian suit, it shows elegance without flash. Waves of red cherry, crushed rose petals, and subtle hints of mint create a perfume that transfixes the senses. The palate delivers remarkable freshness and energy while maintaining profound depth. A Barolo that hasn't forgotten its roots, much like the generations it celebrates." Wine Enthusiast
"This is a restrained wine with aromas of Parma violets, dried cherries, strawberries, liquorice and a hint of vibrant orange peel. It is almost austere on the nose. On the palate it is elegant, with muscular but refined tannins, refreshing acidity, a velvety texture, flavours of dried flowers and oranges and a delicate finish." James Suckling
"A beguiling and expressive nose entices with notes of roses, tobacco, earthy medicinal roots and exotic spices. It has the fruit density of the vintage with layers of elegant, chalky tannins and well-embedded oak. Cedar-infused red berries make for a flavour that melts on the lips, and the finish is downright addictive." Decanter
"The Barolo Aleste 2021 with fruit from the Cannubi Boschis vineyard is a lush and beautiful expression with dark fruit, spice, liquorice, cola and blue flowers. Sandrone's style is always fruit-driven and bold, but you can also count on the wines to have excellent contour with oak spice, soft richness and texture thanks to expert ageing in tonneaux. The balance is impeccable." Wine Advocate
"Although this Barolo is rather quiet today, it is reminiscent of cherry, blackcurrant, violets, minerals and wild herbs. The flavours are in perfect balance with the bright acidity and refined tannins, leaving a long, detailed aftertaste of fruit, minerals and spicy elements. Shows great intensity from start to finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2021 Barolo Aleste is a true masterpiece. Vertical and explosive in the glass, with enormous energy, the 2021 possesses incredible richness paired with pulsating energy. Plum, black cherry, gravel, lavender and mocha rise from the glass. The harvestwill find a Barolo of stature and greatness." Vinous
