Venice, 1967: Charles de Gaulle and his wife Yvonne are guests at the Hotel Gritti, invited to the Biennale. A red wine is served at the state dinner, which the president considers to be a great Bordeaux – and publicly praises. When the sommelier reveals that it is a Venegazzù from Montello, just fifty kilometres away, the surprise is perfect. Conte Piero Loredan, descendant of the Venetian Doge Leonardo Loredan, then commissioned the artist Tono Zancanaro to design two labels: Dionysus with the dedication "des roses pour Madame" for the president's wife, the goddess of wine with "...et pour Monsieur la Bombe" for de Gaulle himself. The Capo di Stato was born – a wine for heads of state. To this day, bottles are sent to the Élysée Palace every time a new French president is elected.

Not a marketing gimmick, but history that continues in the glass. Some of the grapes come from the legendary "Le 100 piante" vineyard, planted in 1946 – long before the Supertuscans were even conceived. Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Malbec (5%) grow on ferrous clay soils, the Ferreto soils of the Montello, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The grapes are harvest from mid-September to early October, depending on the variety. The French reference book "100 Vins de Légende" lists Capo di Stato as one of the hundred legendary wines of the world. The wine matures for thirty months – sixty per cent in large oak barrels and forty per cent in new barriques.

The result is a Bordeaux blend with a Venetian soul: deep, bright garnet red in colour, truffles, dark berries, tobacco, fine spices and a hint of undergrowth on the nose. Powerful and multi-layered on the palate, with ripe fruit flavours, velvety tannins and a freshness that reveals the cool microclimate of the Montello. The 2019 is warmer and more accessible than its austere 2017 predecessor – a wine that is already seductive and yet can mature for decades.
