Some wines have to fight for their recognition over years, while others are in the limelight from birth. For a long time, Barolo Le Vigne was the "second" Barolo in the Sandrone family, standing in the shadow of the iconic Cannubi Boschi – until connoisseurs and critics gradually realised that there was no hierarchy here, but rather equality. Today, after more than three decades since the first vintage in 1990, Le Vigne is no longer a complement to Aleste, but its congenial partner – a wine that perfects the ancient Piedmontese art of blending several vineyard sites and increasingly holds a candle to Aleste.
Le Vigne – "The vineyards" – is more than just a name, it is the programme. Four carefully selected parcels draw a perfect diagonal through the Barolo region: Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba brings depth and richness, Villero in Castiglione Falletto provides structure and elegance, Vignane in the historic centre of Barolo contributes those characteristics similar to Cannubi, and Merli in Novello adds earthy robustness and aromatic complexity. Each site thrives on different soils – light and sandy here, compact and deep there – at different altitudes and exposures. The result is a composition that does not celebrate the terroir of a single vineyard, but unites the diversity of the entire Barolo region in one glass. Each parcel is harvested, vinified and matured separately until the final blend.
The 2021, from that almost perfect vintage that gave Piedmont ideal conditions, shows a bright, royal ruby red colour in the glass with a subtle brightening at the edge. The nose is fascinatingly complex: fresh redcurrants, cherries, violets, a hint of liquorice and lively orange peel. Earthy notes of truffle, graphite and rosemary add depth to the bouquet. On the palate, Le Vigne reveals all its class: austere and multi-layered, with compact, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a texture that is both powerful and elegant. Graphite flavours dominate, underpinned by red fruits and mineral notes that give the wine the tension that great Barolo wines are known for. The final is endlessly long, savoury and juicy – a wine of impressive presence and energy. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby colour with a fine garnet sheen. Presents itself with an extremely fragrant and inviting nose of wild raspberry, rose petals and cherry syrup. Dense tannins characterise the palate, full-bodied and gripping, showing pronounced earthy notes, lots of pressure, but also still very nervous and young, still needs ageing." Falstaff
"Eucalyptus, juniper and tar notes mingle with the fruit of cherry, raspberry and plum in this dense red wine. Assertive tannins hold court on the finish, with a slight but not intrusive astringency. The whole is carried by a beautiful acidity that leaves a lasting aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"Four distinct voices from Baudana (Serralunga d'Alba), Villero (Castiglione Falletto), Vignane (Barolo), and Merli (Novello) create something extraordinary together. This is Barolo's warm handshake, an invitation to understand what makes this region magical. The aromatics rise with quiet confidence: wild strawberries, morning roses, fresh sage, and subtle tar. On the palate, it reveals its soul gradually, each layer building naturally into the next, creating a wine of remarkable depth without ever feeling forced. This is how people fall in love with Barolo, through wines that speak of place with both authority and grace." Wine Enthusiast
"This wide range of fruit from different sites, altitudes and soil types results in the Luciano Sandrone 2021 Barolo Le Vigne. I love the brightness and focus of the fruit, the beautiful complexity and the rich mouthfeel. The fruit flavours are interspersed with liquorice, cola and spice. The high notes are quite evident in this excellent vintage. When I tasted the wine again 24 hours later, I found these notes just as intense and beautiful." Wine Advocate
"The Barolo Le Vigne 2021 is an elegant, seamless wine. Crushed flowers, bright red fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and cherry open gracefully in the glass. This is an elegant, refined Barolo. The recent relocation of the vineyards to Serralunga and Monforte and the longer fermentation have transformed Le Vigne into a darker, grittier wine, while the inclusion of stems in some lots adds an aromatic dimension to the wine. Le Vigne is a wine on the move." Vinous
"This is an austere wine that is complex and layered, with aromas of fresh redcurrants, red cherries, violets and a hint of liquorice. Graphite dominates the flavours, with a full body, firm, velvety tannins and a long, juicy, energetic and perfectly integrated acidity. Polished, elegant finish." James Suckling
