Vergne, the highest hamlet in the municipality of Barolo, has been the heart of G.D. Vajra for over fifty years. Aldo Vaira decided to adopt organic farming here when no one else in the Langhe was doing so; today, his children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro continue to run the estate, which holds biodynamic certification. Bricco delle Viole lies at the heart of this terrain: a south to south-south-west facing ridge at an altitude of between 400 and 470 metres, one of the highest sites in the Barolo region.

The Tortonian marl soil, rich in silt and clay, lends the Nebbiolo its freshness, whilst the southerly aspect counterbalances the cool altitude. In the cellar, Vajra sticks to traditional methods: spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, after which the wine matures for just under three and a half years in large Slavonian oak botti before being released for sale following further bottle ageing – without any rush, as befits a Barolo from these heights.

In the glass, a bright, luminous ruby red. The bouquet opens with rose petals and delicate spices, followed by candied raspberries and wild strawberries; as it breathes, a refined, leathery note emerges. On the palate, the Barolo is juicy and finely honed; the tannins are present but velvety in texture, whilst the final lingers for a long time, underpinned by a subtle saltiness.
