Andrius. Here, where in 1893 courageous winegrowers laid the first foundation stone of South Tyrolean co-operative history, a Sauvignon Blanc of rare strength and elegance is still produced today. The vines thrive on the calcareous slopes between 260 and 380 metres, where dolomite rock and Andrian porphyry characterise the terroir like two old friends who complement each other. It is the Mediterranean climate that shows its cooler side up here. Temperatures drop at night, allowing the vines to breathe. During the day, the South Tyrolean sun warms the stony soils – an interplay that gives the Sauvignon Bianco that special tension that characterises great wines. In the hands of cellar master Rudi Kofler, selected grapes from the oldest vineyards are turned into a wine of remarkable depth. Six months on the fine lees. Eighty per cent in stainless steel for freshness, twenty per cent in large wooden barrels for structure.

The grapes for "del Fondatore" are harvested from historic Apulian Alberello vineyards in the Cellino San Marco region, which were planted in 1968 and are personally tended by President Angelo Maci. The carefully selected Primitivo and Aglianico grapes are harvested by hand in crates. Some of the grapes are dried in a well-ventilated drying room, and the high concentration of juice inside the grapes gives it extra body and an excellent structure. This exceptional wine, whose labels are numbered consecutively, matures for 9 months in new barriques and is further refined before being released in the bottle.

Beautiful Malvasia with a lot of varietal expression and an impressive potpourri of flavours. Jasmine, pear and white peach develop in the glass, with hints of passion fruit, spices and lime on the palate. Soft texture, very good structure and a complexity that opens up new facets with every sip. The finish is deep and long and, as always, the long yeast ageing time ensures promising ageing potential. Laura Brunelli's Rosso is a blend of Sangiovese grapes from Podernovone - 500 metres above sea level on the south-eastern slope of Montalcino with a south-western exposure - and Canalicchio on the northern side of the village. The vines for the first vineyard were planted in 1998, those for the second in 1989. "Our Rosso is made from the same grapes as the Brunello," says Laura Brunelli. The wine is traditionally aged for a year in large oak barrels. It is extremely fresh every year and not without complexity. The aromas of redcurrants, wild strawberries, black pepper and juniper are followed by a bright bouquet of red fruits on the medium-bodied palate. It has velvety tannins and a refreshing, integrated acidity. A really great interpretation of the terroir and, as every year, a little Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE

Deep ruby red colour, lush notes of cherries, strawberries and sweet oak spice, vanilla and black pepper. The Sangiovese gives the blend great freshness and is in perfect balance with the silky and soft tannins of the Merlot. Overall rich, but always elegant and with great persistence. Friulano Dolée is another impressive flagship wine from Vie di Romans. It has a bright straw-yellow colour. Clean, fresh aromas of honey, citrus fruits and pear, complemented by ripe banana. On the palate, its smooth texture provides the perfect backdrop for a beautifully layered bouquet of fruit, including peach, melon, quince and fresh pear. A mature, refined wine that finishes long, with an excellent balance of acidity and fruit. SUPERIORE.DE

The first 1,850 Pinot Noir vines were brought to Italy from Burgundy by Count Vistarino back in 1865. Since then, the vinification of this demanding grape variety has been continuously refined over the generations. Today, the Pinot Noirs from the winegrowing dynasty can even outshine much more expensive Pinot Noirs from Burgundy at international tastings. The grapes for the winery's top crus are grown at an altitude of 400 metres, and the high temperature fluctuations between day and night ensure a complexity, precision and elegance that is rarely found even in Burgundy.

In 1975, the Carricante vines were planted, which today bear the Etna Bianco by Giovanni Rosso. Almost five decades of roots in volcanic lava sand, at 730 to 750 metres, exposed to the north-north-east – where the sun has to fight all day and the grapes ripen slowly, cool and with rare aromatic precision. Davide Rosso discovered this spot in 2014 and bought the property two years later. What attracted him was the same logic that guides him in Serralunga: not terroir for the sake of terroir, but one that characterises the wine, without help, without make-up. The soils of the Contrada Montedolce – volcanic sand, ash, mineral-rich subsoil, aerated and drained like hardly any other site on the northern slope – gave him what he was looking for. The old Alberello vines, trained with a double inverted Guyot, bear little. But what they do bear is concentrated. Hand-picked in October. Spontaneous fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel for 15 to 20 days. Five months sur lie with weekly bâtonnage. No wood. The vinification is silence – the wine should speak.

A wonderfully mature Salice Salentino with character and depth: "Per Lui" Salice Salentino Riserva comes from selected Negroamaro plots that are deeply rooted in the iron-rich soils around Salice. The long maturation in wood - partly barrique, partly tonneau - gives the wine density and expression without jeopardising its balance. Dark ruby red in the glass with a light garnet-red rim. The aroma is warm and complex: black cherry, plum, dried herbs, some tobacco and a hint of cedar. Structured and powerful on the palate, with well-integrated tannins, juicy fruit and a spicy finish. An elegant, mature Salice Salentino that shows its finer, more serious side - very much in the style of the great wines of southern Puglia. SUPERIORE.DE

The grapes for this exciting, mash-fermented Trebbiano come from the vineyards that the Dunkleys (former owners of the winery) found when they arrived in Gaiole in Chianti. They are destemmed and fermented in Cocciopesto amphorae. Once fermentation is complete, most of the wine remains on the skins for six months, while a small portion (10-15%) is aged without skins for the same amount of time in new Liters tonneaux. Rich orange-yellow. In the slightly reductive bouquet notes of stewed apple, citrus and pear. Very fruity on the palate, with a striking acidity and a beautiful tannin. This unfiltered rosato, matured in Liters amphorae, is the result of the strictest selection of Syrah grapes from the winery. The spontaneously fermented and Demeter-certified result is just 4,000 bottles, which are sold in selected specialist shops and restaurants. Bright golden yellow. On the nose, an impressive potpourri of yellow fruits, apricot, quince, dried fruits and honey. On the palate, almost overwhelmingly full and soft, but never sticky or broad. You taste dried fruit again, some acacia honey and wonderfully ripe yellow fruit. A fine sweetness fills the mouth and inevitably awakens the desire for another sip. In South Tyrol, the "Vigna" classification guarantees the origin of a single-vineyard wine. This Sauvignon is a selection of the best grapes from the Oberkerschbaum estate in Buchholz/Salorno at an altitude of around 800 metres. Thanks to the special microclimate, the ideal orientation and the challenging altitude, the Oberkerschbaum estate is one of the most exciting cru sites for South Tyrolean Sauvignon.

Bright ruby colour with a purple shimmer. The bouquet is fresh and youthful: red cherries, crisp plums, a hint of cranberry and subtle floral nuances. Straightforward on the palate, with clear fruit, present, animating acidity and a fine spicy finish. Thanks to its maturation in stainless steel, it is particularly appealing to drink and shows the unadorned, fruit-emphasised character of the grape variety. A juicy and serious Barbera that clearly expresses its origins and is great fun even when young. SUPERIORE.DE

Siccagno is Arianna Occhipinti's personal monologue about Nero d'Avola – not a loud one, but a concentrated, quiet and deep-breathing one. The name comes from the Sicilian term for dry farming (sicco) and aptly describes the origin of this wine: deep-rooted vines in calcareous soils near Vittoria, not irrigated, consciously entrusted to nature. 2021 was a year with clear light, good aeration and a vegetative cycle without extreme heat or stress – perfect conditions for a subtly structured vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts and macerated on the skins for around 30 days. The wine is matured for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels – no haste, no fining, no filtering. Just patience and trust in what the soil tells us.
