Ugolaia is a name that carries weight in Montalcino. The vineyard is situated in the classic Sesta area, facing south-west, on one of the sunniest and best-ventilated plots on the entire estate – and it embodies a tradition that Lisini takes to heart: The estate's 'veterans' – those most experienced staff members who have known the estate for decades – graft premium cuttings from the estate's own massalselection onto wild rootstocks by hand. No clonal selection from a catalogue, no technological shortcuts – just knowledge passed down from person to person, vintage after vintage.

According to Lisini, the grapes from this vineyard have a distinctive character, good skin integrity and exceptional concentration in the pulp. Fermentation takes place in small barrels of 6 to 15 hectolitres – a vinification process akin to microvinification, which allows the vineyard’s specific character to shine through to the full. This is followed by 48 months’ ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels. Produced only in exceptional vintages.

2020 was warm and bountiful – a year that gave the Ugolaia what its south-west-facing aspect brings out best: depth of sunshine, ripe fruit and richness. And yet the Ugolaia remains what it always is: Lisini's sunniest, most approachable expression – in contrast to the Riserva, which has greater depth, the Ugolaia showcases the radiant, generous side of this terroir. Intense garnet red. On the nose, Marasca cherry, dark berries, violets, balsamic herbs, a hint of tobacco and earth – elegant and of great aromatic depth. On the palate, it is precise and full-bodied, with silky tannins, balanced freshness and a long, mineral and spicy final. No 'Riserva' label – but the heart of a cru. SUPERIORE.DE
