The name pays tribute to the Butteri, those legendary horsemen of the Maremma who have been the symbol of this region for generations – powerful yet elegant. It refers to the long, tapered ash-wood herding staff with which the Butteri still guide their herds across the plains of the Maremma to this day. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah blend here to create a full-bodied, rich red wine – the Syrah component lends it particular depth without sacrificing the elegance and freshness typical of Rocca di Frassinello.

The vines are situated near Gavorrano in the province of Grosseto, in a Mediterranean climate characterised by hot summers and mild winters, whilst the temperature fluctuations ensure lively acidity. 2023 brought a smaller harvest, offset by high quality: a promising spring gave way in July to a heatwave that placed great demands on the vines – only meticulous vineyard management and timely intervention ultimately ensured excellent grapes. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation, then six months' ageing—half in new barrels—and a further six months' bottle ageing.

A clear ruby red with a delicate lightening at the rim. The bouquet is spicy, with hints of tobacco, nutmeg and leather, underpinned by lovely cherry fruit. On the palate, it is direct and uncomplicated, with ripe tannins, lively acidity and a juicy finish. SUPERIORE.DE
