If only it were true. Angelo Gaja's Tuscan masterpiece Magari bears this Italian expression full of longing and hope in its name, and it tells the story of a dream that became reality. When the Piedmontese patriarch first explored the Maremma coast in the 1990s, he saw the potential for something extraordinary in the gentle hills of Bolgheri. Eighteen rounds of negotiations were necessary to acquire the Ca' Marcanda estate – "the house of endless negotiations", as it has been known ever since.

Today, the three protagonists of this exceptional Bordeaux blend thrive on the fertile "terre brune", the clay-rich brown soils far from the coast. Cabernet Franc leads the blend with 60% and gives the wine its characteristic elegance and freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes 30% and brings structure and depth, while 10% Petit Verdot provides the spicy complexity that gives Magari its unmistakable character. Blackcurrants and ripe plums blend with eucalyptus and lavender, while hints of graphite and fine tobacco betray the Bordeaux origins of the grape varieties. A velvety texture of remarkable finesse unfolds on the palate – never heavy, always carried by lively acidity, which gives the wine the tension that characterises great Maremma wines.
