When Angelo Gaja finally acquired those 100 hectares in Castagneto Carducci in 1996 after 18 gruelling rounds of negotiations, which from then on were known as Ca' Marcanda – the house of endless conversations – this name was more than just a play on words. It was the promise of a visionary who had already revolutionised Piedmont and now wanted to write his next legend on the Tuscan coast.

Promis embodies this promise in its purest form: A cuvée of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese, deliberately labelled as Toscana IGT rather than Bolgheri DOC – an act of creative freedom that allows Gaja to also use Syrah and Sangiovese, grape varieties that would not find a place in the traditionally Bordeaux-focussed Bolgheri classification. The dark, limestone and clay-rich soils of Bolgheri and neighbouring Bibbona lend this wine a depth that manifests itself in juicy blackberry notes, spicy accents and herbal undertones. The Sangiovese brings the lively structure that beats at the heart of Tuscany, while the Mediterranean climate of the coast ensures perfect ripeness. Bright purple-red colour. Wild roses and violets on the nose, earthy notes of maritime pine, eucalyptus and wet stone. The palate reveals all the elegance of Gaja's signature style: Fresh and juicy, with creamy, supple tannins and that salty minerality that has become the hallmark of great Bolgheri vintages.
