In 1974, a decision was made that nobody really understood at the time. Herbert Tiefenbrunner had the grapes from the Fennberg – a high plateau at 1,000 metres above sea level in the municipality of Margreid – a single-vineyard wine. Müller-Thurgau. At a time when single vineyard sites for white grape varieties were virtually unheard of in Italy. At an altitude where hardly anyone expected great wine. Named after Field Marshal Joseph von Fenner zu Fennberg, the Austrian officer who once owned this high plateau. Fifty years later, Feldmarschall is one of Italy's most iconic white wines.

The soil of the Fennberg is the secret: striking red soil, characterised by heterogeneous glacial moraine rock. In the middle layers, silty-loamy sand with red and white marble, porphyry and granite boulders. At depth, dolomite and limestone. The high salt content of this soil is the reason for the unmistakable fruit and herbal flavours that make no other Müller-Thurgau in the world taste like this one. 3.1 hectares, up to 8,500 vines per hectare, 33 hectolitre yield. The exposed south-facing slope at 1,000 metres requires two to four harvests with strict selection according to optimum ripeness. Short mash contact time, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation 70% in large wooden barrels and 30% in concrete. Ten months on the fine lees, then a year and a half in the bottle. Only 14,000 bottles produced each year.

Pale straw yellow with greenish reflections. Intense bouquet of white flowers and yellow fruit – peach, apricot, mineral spice, a hint of salt that betrays the soil. Delicate and elegantly balanced on the palate, with juiciness and fresh acidity – persistent, precise, unmistakable. With age, the mineral components become more prominent. SUPERIORE.DE
