“Collezione Cinquanta +6” Vino Rosso d’Italia s.a.
The name reveals the concept: Cinquanta – fifty – stands for the fifty-fifty split between Primitivo and Negroamaro, the two leading grape varieties of Salento. With this cuvée, Cantine San Marzano, founded in 1962 as a winegrowers' cooperative and now one of the largest producers in Apulia with over 1,200 members, has created a wine with an immediate impact. The grapes come from vines of different ages on the iron oxide-rich terra rossa soils of the province of Taranto. After the harvest, maceration takes place at a controlled temperature, followed by twelve months of ageing in wooden barrels.

!["F" Negroamaro di Salento IGP 2021]()
“F” Negroamaro di Salento IGP 2021
F for Falò – bonfire. The name alludes to the traditional bonfires that are lit in Salento at the winter solstice. Cantine San Marzano dedicates a single-varietal Negroamaro to this custom, emphasising the dark, intense side of this indigenous grape variety. The grapes grow on the calcareous, iron oxide-rich soils between San Marzano di San Giuseppe and Sava. After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo prolonged maceration, followed by twelve months of ageing in Caucasian oak barrels – an unusual choice of wood that gives the wine its own aromatic signature.

!["Sessantanni" Primitivo di Manduria DOP 2020]()
“Sessantanni” Primitivo di Manduria DOP 2020
Sessantanni – sixty years old. The age of the gnarled bush vines, which are rooted in traditional Alberello training on the iron oxide-rich terra rossa soils of San Marzano and Sava. This form of training, in which the vines grow low and without wire frames, is labour-intensive, but protects the grapes from the scorching Apulian sun and naturally limits yields – around 3,000 kilograms per hectare. With Sessantanni, Cantine San Marzano has created a label that has significantly shaped the international perception of Apulian wines. The fully ripe grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September. 80 per cent of the must is left to macerate for 18 days, the remaining 20 per cent for 25 days for maximum extraction. Vinification with indigenous yeasts, twelve months of ageing in French and American oak barrels.

!["62 Anniversario" Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOP 2019]()
“62 Anniversario” Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOP 2019
62 years after the cooperative was founded in 1962 – this explains the name of this Riserva, which surpasses the Sessantanni in terms of ageing time and quality. The grapes come from the oldest plots of the cooperative, bush vines in Alberello training on the characteristic red clay soils of Salento. The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by prolonged maceration to maximise extraction. Then aged for 18 months in small oak barrels – six months longer than the Sessantanni –followed by further ageing in the bottle before release.

It is not a classic château or romantic winery, but after the separation from its long-standing cooperation partner Farnese, it is to become the showpiece cooperative of Apulia. The Cantine San Marzano, located near the town of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, is the result of the merger of 19 regional families who have been growing wine on the land between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas for generations. With their great passion, they have given the Apulian wine an independent profile and recognition in the wine world, without denying the old Salento wine tradition dating back more than 3,000 years. With around 1,200 winegrowers cultivating around 1,500 hectares of vineyards, the cooperative is an important economic factor in the southern Italian region, which is otherwise not blessed with prosperity. At the Cantine San Marzano, under the management of Mauro di Maggio, with a great deal of experience and expertise, inexpensive, modern, elegant wines of various quality levels are produced from authentic grape varieties, about four fifths of which are exported abroad.
The climatic conditions around San Marzano are quite demanding, as the southern part of Apulia has to struggle with drought, frost and the Scirocco. Because of the warm and dry wind from Africa, the vines of the winegrowing community coordinated by Salvatore Ricchiardi are hardly affected by insects and fungi. Since the red soils in the province of Taranto, which contain iron oxides and are mostly calcareous, are low in nutrients and humus, the yields in the vineyards are naturally limited. The vineyards are mainly planted with red and white indigenous plants such as Fiano, Verdeca, Malvasia Nera, Negroamaro and Primitivo. The large stocks of very old Primitivo vines are extremely valuable. At 3,000 kilograms per hectare, they are particularly low in yield and deliver the grapes for the top-quality wine produced by the inspired cellarmaster Mario Ercolino. 'Sessantanni'. The noble wine has among other things 2009 the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London in the category 'Best pure red wine in the world' won.
San Marzano not only impresses with its excellent grape quality, but after extensive renovation and major investments it is today the most modern and technically best equipped winery in Apulia. It is led by a highly motivated team. It consists of qualified oenologists and agronomists who have the ambition to produce the best Apulian wines in the long run. Every step of the production process - from vineyard to bottling - is carefully controlled and documented in order to continuously improve the quality of the wide range. SUPERIORE.DE
