Castelnuovo dell'Abate is located in the south-easternmost tip of the denominazione – further away from the cool northern slopes of Montalcino, closer to Monte Amiata, the extinct volcano that moderates the climate of the area. When Gabriele Mastrojanni bought the Poderi Loreto and San Pio in 1975, there was hardly anyone here. The land was barren, the soil poor in clay and rich in sandstone, tuff and pebbles. That was precisely the reason. Today, Andrea Machetti as CEO and Oenologist Maurizio Castelli continue to run the winery in the spirit of the founder – with a consistency that knows no compromise: no herbicides, no chemical interventions since November 2022, fermentation in concrete cement with wild yeasts, long ageing in large Allier oak barrels between 16 and 54 hectolitres. Brunello is the result of the interaction between different plots of land – different exposures, altitudes between 180 and 420 metres, different vine ages – and from this it gains its complexity.
The 2021 vintage was particularly challenging for Castelnuovo dell'Abate: The April frost drastically reduced yields in some cases. What remained was concentration. A warm but balanced summer, two providential downpours in July and August, then a perfect September with large day-night temperature differences. Antonio Galloni presented 2021 alongside 2016 and 2019 – with a speciality: it is more accessible, more direct, more seductive than these two great vintages. Bright, deep ruby red in the glass. The nose opens with classic Brunello elegance: ripe red cherry, hibiscus, violets, a hint of tobacco, oriental spices and a fine earthiness. Powerful yet precise on the palate – the tannins are dense but polished, the acidity gives the wine tension and length. A Brunello that combines the strength of the vintage with the signature of its terroir: warm but never heavy, structured but never bulky. SUPERIORE.DE
"Warm-scented aromas of forest fruits and flowers, also undergrowth and spices; elegant attack, also with character, mellowness and good length. Pleasing with its elegant yet powerful texture." Vinum
"Bright ruby red with delicately brightening edges. Dark spice and earthy accents on the nose as well as ripe fruit, plum, wet earth and a hint of graphite. Fruit and juice on the palate, precise structure, great length." Falstaff
"Intense balsamic aromas of sage and mint dusted with cocoa lead. The palate is smooth, polished and sleek without lacking structure. Those sandy tannins feel expertly placed. Sweet herbs and sun-baked stone accent the luxuriant red berries. Long in satisfying flavours and harmonious in all its elements but worth waiting another year." Decanter
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino smolders up from the glass with a burst of crushed ashen stone and sage, giving way to mulling spice and dried black cherries. It envelops the palate with silken textures and masses of ripe dark red fruits, soothing, polished and balanced in feel. Edgy tannins mingle with a subtle citrus twang as rosy inner florals resonate through the dramatically long, youthfully structured finale. The balance here is beyond reproach. Mastrojanni blended in the juice from the Vigna Schiena d'Asino to bolster this bottling." Vinous
"Aromas of black cherries, orange peel and crushed stones, Medium-bodied with juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. There’s almost a sandy, terra cotta character in the finish. Lovely balance." James Suckling
"Complex and shapely, the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows fluid contours that evolve with each swirl of the glass before settling into notes of cassis, dark cherry, spice, grenadine and grilled watermelon. The palate carries energy and brightness over a medium-to full-bodied frame, finishing with a subtle mineral saltiness that adds lift and definition. This classic village expression draws fruit from 14.4 hectares across varied soils, exposures and elevations, resulting in a balanced and expressive wine that remains very much in evolution."
