Giovanni Neri died in 1986, fifteen years after purchasing Podere Casanova. He had lived out his dream – but not long enough to see what became of it. His son Giacomo, and his grandsons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo, are carrying on his dream. And to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first vineyard, they dedicated a wine to the founder that bears his name – and embodies his philosophy: the belief that Montalcino was capable of more than the world realised at the time. The vineyard is old and untamed, as the estate itself puts it – vines over fifty years old that have never stopped putting down deep roots.

What Giacomo and his sons do with this vineyard is the most labour-intensive winemaking process in the entire estate: 20% of the grapes are fermented as whole bunches, stems included – a decision that lends the wine a layer of herbal spice, structure and freshness that no single pressing alone can produce. 29 days of maceration in open, conical fermentation vessels – longer than for any other Casanova di Neri Brunello. No added yeast, no intervention.

2021 was a year that suited this approach: even ripening, pronounced structure, almost perfect tannin ripeness. The result is a wine of such elegance that it needs to force nothing. A deep, intense ruby red. On the nose, dark berries, blood orange, mint and a delicate floral hint – complex and imbued with great serenity. On the palate, it is intense and balanced, with remarkably mature tannins, fully integrated acidity and a vibrant, chiselled final.
