Gallule – a name that wafts over the hills of Castellina like a gentle breeze from times long past. It is the Lombard name for what was once the heart of this magical place: the Galla, the fruit of the centuries-old oaks that dominate the wide valley at the foot of the hills. Here, where the son of the Longobard king Berengario gave this land to his bride as a wedding gift back in 994, one of the most extraordinary Chianti Classico wines in the region is produced today. The vines that give life to this Gran Selezione are rooted in terraces that were created by man centuries ago – stone witnesses to a time when viticulture was still a craft. These UNESCO-protected terraces, nestled between olive trees and cypresses, create a microclimate of unique harmony. The Galestro-rich soils, interspersed with limestone and sedimentary stones, allow the Sangiovese roots to penetrate deep into the earth and extract the minerality that gives the wine its unmistakable signature.

The almost perfect 2019 vintage underlines the entire philosophy of the Bär-Bettschart family: after meticulous selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar, the hand-picked grapes ferment for 30 days in French oak vats. 14 months in French barriques – 30 per cent new – followed by four months in natural concrete tanks, complete the metamorphosis. This final élevage in concrete promotes natural clarification and enhances the fruity notes that are so characteristic of Castellina in Chianti.

The Gallule shines in the glass in a bright ruby red colour. The bouquet unfolds notes of cherries, orange peel, graphite and tea leaves, interspersed with Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, creamy, almost velvety tannins merge with balanced acidity to create a wine of remarkable depth, whose final in an explosion of fruity flavours. This is more than just a wine – it is a cru that represents not only the terroir of Castellina in Chianti, but a priceless cultural and historical heritage. The 2019 is bright and powerful, with lively acidity and is already very expressive. Nevertheless, it still needs a few years in the bottle to develop. The purity of the fruit is striking. Red and purple fruits, spices, mint and blood orange are beautifully emphasised. This is the first year that barrels were introduced. "The organic Gagliole 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gallule comes from a vineyard in Castellina in Chianti with 20 to 50-year-old vines. Only 2,438 bottles were produced. The Gallule shows more texture and fruit weight, but also structure, with black fruit tones of plum and blackberry.
