Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are situated in the territories of three neighbouring municipalities within the Chianti Classico region: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family vinified all three major vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione for the first time, in order to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Castello di Fonterutoli is sourced from 11 different plots at altitudes of 420–510 metres around the hamlet of Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. It is, in effect, the estate's "Château" and, at the same time, its oldest cru; it was first produced in 1995 as the predecessor to today's Gran Selezione. It boasts a rich colour and a distinct bouquet of blackberries, cherries, violets and flowers, with a hint of nougat. This full-bodied Castello Fonterutoli captivates with its beguiling sweetness of extract and polished tannins. The intense and concentrated flavour enchants the senses.
