Siepi has always been more than just a vineyard – it was a vision waiting to be realised. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, this mystical place lies amidst dense oak forests near Castellina in Chianti, ten hectares of pure magic on Alberese soils that were already appreciated by the ancient Romans. Paradoxically, the story of Siepi 2023 begins with one of the most challenging vintages in recent history. A mild winter with sparse rainfall and a rainy spring that pushed the Mazzei winegrowers to their limits. And yet, or perhaps precisely because of this, a wine was produced that epitomises the company's philosophy in an impressive way: "Great vineyards shine in difficult vintages."
At the end of the 1980s, Lapo Mazzei recognised the incredible potential of this unique microclimate and ventured a bold experiment: Merlot as the perfect complement to Sangiovese, a revolutionary decision for Chianti Classico that is still unique in the region today. Here, between the protective forests at an ideal altitude, these two grape varieties should not only coexist, but "speak with one voice", as Giovanni Mazzei poetically puts it. The 2023 Siepi, equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese, tells the story of an unusual vintage in which Merlot initially takes the lead. Its velvety roundness, power and flavour envelop the palate before the Sangiovese slowly, very slowly, emerges and gives the wine that lively acidity that makes it so seductively drinkable.
In the glass, a monumental wine of deep ruby red colour reveals itself, with an aroma that alternates between dark chocolate, ripe plums and wild herbs. The full complexity of this exceptional terroir unfolds on the palate: powerful and structured, with a length that seems to touch on eternity. Siepi 2023 is more than just a wine – it is the testimony of a 600-year-old family tradition that proves that true greatness does not come from perfect vintages, but from the ability to make great things out of challenges. "This single-vineyard blend of Sangiovese and Merlot offers bold, plummy black fruit scents with some menthol, spice, currants and chocolate. In the mouth it's poised, and vertical in shape. Plush black fruits and grilled herbs are accompanied by touches of spice and chocolate, and licks of iron and salt, with fine, chalky tannins and a silky mouthfeel. The minty acidity is persistent, leading into a long, delicate finish with some floral lift and just a hint of alcohol. Classy stuff." Decanter
"Aromas of blackberries, black olives, lavender, violets and hints of oyster shells and iodine follow through to a medium body with fine, creamy tannins and a long and energetic finish. Linear and bright. Already showing nicely, but better from 2028." James Suckling
