Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are situated in the territories of three neighbouring municipalities within the Chianti Classico region: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family vinified all three major vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione for the first time, in order to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiòla.

As the result of 50 years of research, 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese grape were planted on a sunny plateau near Castelnuova Berardenga, from which this exceptionally interesting and distinctive wine was created a few years ago. The overall impression is one of great balance and straightforwardness, with hints of red cherries, spices, dried blueberries and tobacco. It is the warmest and most balanced of the three Gran Selezione wines. Its intensity, rich colour and precise fruitiness instantly captivate Sangiovese lovers. SUPERIORE.DE

"A clean, straightforward bouquet of raspberries and dried flowers; a powerful attack with perfectly structured tannins, lively acidity and a complex finish. This vintage is once again a delight with its fruitiness and finesse." Vinum

"The Vicoregio vineyard stretches across a sun-drenched plateau at an altitude of 350 metres in the warm village of Castelnuovo Berardenga. It was originally established to study various Sangiovese biotypes – 36 in total. The woody, cedar-like bouquet is rounded off by notes of incense, dried mint and sun-kissed earth. Wild black and redcurrants characterise the core, and the wine has ample body to integrate the oak and soften the sharp, powerful tannins. It needs just one more year in the bottle to come together." Decanter

"A concentrated style, this red exhibits blackberry, plum, iron, leather and resin flavors. Veers toward the fruit midpalate before conceding to the burly tannins on the finish." Wine Spectator

"Subtle and floral, with notes of violets, roses, geraniums, red cherries, pomegranate and incense. Medium-bodied, refreshing and firm, with chalky tannins and aromatic notes of liquorice and cherry stones." James Suckling
