In 1982, Bruno Giacosa bought the Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. It was the first and most important investment of his life – and it came as no surprise to those who knew him. Since the 1960s, he had been vinifying bought-in grapes from this south-eastern corner of the Barolo area and making wines that are still among the reference points of the appellation today. When the farmers began to bottle their own wines, there was only one answer for Giacosa: to buy what he could no longer rent.

Falletto is an amphitheatre. 13 hectares, exposed to the south-west, on steep slopes of calcareous clay in the extreme south of Serralunga – adjacent to the nature park, at an altitude of more than 400 metres. Bruno considered Falletto to be the best site he knew for producing long-lived, elegant Barolos. The terroir gives the wine a density and minerality that clearly distinguishes it from the softer soils of La Morra as well as from the more direct structures of other Serralunga sites. Vinification follows the Giacosa dogma: destemming, 25 days of spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks with complete malolactic fermentation. Then the long road: 32 months in large French oak barrels, followed by six months of bottle ageing. No small wood, no intervention that was not necessary.

2022 was a hot vintage and, as announced, Bruna decided not to make a Riserva. The Falletto white label bears this summer with dignity: deep garnet red, fresh plum, cherry, spices, dried flowers, a hint of tobacco and black truffle on the nose. The palate is dense and structured, with the fine, supple tannins that Serralunga produces in good years and a freshness that is not noticeable from the vintage. The finish is long, mineral and persistent. Falletto is not a wine that declares itself. It waits for the right moment. SUPERIORE.DE
