The wine comes from a single, gently sloping vineyard above Rocchetta Tanaro, called Bricco dell'Uccellone, named after an elderly local woman who always kept a sharp eye on the vineyards, dressed in black. Here, old vines grow on barren, chalky soils that produce low yields but highly concentrated harvest. With tireless dedication, the Bologna family fulfils the legacy of Giacomo Bologna, who is rightly described as the father of modern Barbera d'Asti. 2021 began with a cool spring, followed by a warm, stable summer that ensured slow, even ripening. The grapes were hand-picked in perfect condition, followed by a long maceration and 12 months of ageing in French barriques.
Deep ruby colour with a purple core, a silent indication of the concentration of this exceptional Barbera. The bouquet is lush and multi-layered: dark cherry, blackberry, ripe plum, plus hints of liquorice, cinnamon, dried violets and fine tobacco. On the palate, ripe fruit fullness and juicy acidity merge with a framework of supple, ripe tannins. The finish is long, warm and delicately flavoured. Bricco dell'Uccellone has been synonymous with the renaissance of Barbera since the 1980s – a world-famous wine that shows how this grape variety achieves its own unmistakable greatness between elegance and power under experienced care. "Firm, deep, tart, warm, alcoholic nose, predominantly ripe black berries, smoky, bacony, slightly tobacco and ashy notes, dried herbs and light roasted oak spice. Ripe, quite dense, again firmly knitted, juicy dark fruit, present, crumbly-sandy, still youthful tannins, smoky and again also slightly roasted wood notes, persistent and very powerful on the palate, noticeable, yet integrated alcohol, some chocolate and coffee in the background, clearly salty, good depth, very good, firm, juicy, rather spicy and slightly ethereal finish with some sandy tannin grip and alcohol warmth." Wein-Plus
"Medium, transparent garnet red colour with a slightly brightening rim. Very clear and clean on the nose, with appealing fruit flavours of ripe cherries and wild berries as well as hints of bread crust and light balsamic notes. Very juicy on the palate with tightly woven tannins, beautiful structure and well-integrated 16% alcohol, very long finish." Falstaff
"The flavours of plums, blackberries and fruitcake are enveloped by new oak with sweet spices. Lively and silky, it firms up and offers a range of dense tannins on the long finish. It walks the fine line between power and elegance." Wine Spectator
"The 2021 Barbera d'Asti Bricco dell'Uccellone is packed with dark red fruits, espresso, liquorice, new leather, chocolate, menthol and new oak. The Bricco dell'Uccellone is rich and full-bodied and cuts a fine figure. This heady, brooding Barbera from the Bologna family has a lot to offer." Vinous
"A complex, beguiling Barbera with multi-layered aromas of liquorice, sweet violets, earth, leather, restrained black cherries and plums. Medium to full-bodied with flavours of oak bark and graphite, with smoky complexity, velvety tannins and zesty but integrated acidity. Long, chocolaty and warming finish." James Suckling
"This is a big wine with plenty of complexity and depth, but at its core it is pure joy. Aromas of sun-warmed, crushed raspberries and black cherries mingle with fresh thyme, while clove, aniseed and cinnamon stick enliven the nose. The well-structured palate is a dance between fresh and preserved wild berries, accompanied by a lively acidity. Savoury spices, herbs and white pepper linger on the finish, revealing a wine that is serious but just wants to have fun." Wine Enthusiast
