“Vigna Bricco di Vergne” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2023
Fresh wine with a Piedmontese soul: This Dolcetto develops a deep ruby red colour with a violet shimmer in the glass. The nose reveals inviting violet flowers and a fruity cherry flavour. Full-bodied and smooth on the palate, with fresh acidity and a slightly bitter almond note on the finish – typical of Dolcetto and interpreted in a very classic way here. The wine matured for twelve months in stainless steel tanks, which gives it freshness and a clear fruit structure. An everyday wine with a strong character and a regional profile – charming, present and very pleasant to drink. SUPERIORE.DE

“Munfrina” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2024
Munfrina – that's what they called the woman from Monferrato who once farmed this plot with a strict hand. Her Piedmontese nickname stuck to the location long after she herself had disappeared. Today, at 300 to 400 metres in the Sottozona Ferrere of Treiso, Dolcetto vines have been planted here in Guyot since 1980 – on soils that are actually famous for Nebbiolo and Barbaresco. This is precisely what makes this Dolcetto special: the chalky soils with their red sand veins give it a tannin structure that is sweet and smooth rather than angular. Giorgio Pelissero favours short maceration of just four to five days and pure stainless steel ageing for six months – all in the service of the fruit.

Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2025
In Serralunga d'Alba, everything revolves around Nebbiolo. The limestone, the steep slopes, the microclimate – everything is geared towards it, everything serves Barolo. The fact that the Massolino family also cultivates Dolcetto on these soils has less to do with compromise than with conviction: What comes from a great terroir bears its signature, regardless of the variety – regardless of the variety. 2.5 hectares of Dolcetto at 330 metres, in the shadier plots of the Serralunga hills – because the variety ripens quickly and needs some protection from the midday heat of the limestone slopes. Hand-picked, 7 to 9 days of maceration in steel at around 30 degrees, BSA, short maturation in the bottle – the wine is released at the beginning of the following year.

Dolcetto Langhe DOC 2024
The grapes come from the vineyards between La Morra and Verduno, where clay and limestone-rich soils at an altitude of 310 to 370 metres create ideal conditions for this traditional grape variety. Matteo Ascheri's approach is deliberately restrained: minimal use of technology, no barrique treatment and a respectful approach to what nature produces. The result is a Dolcetto as it should be – delicate and expressive, without being artificial or forced.

Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2025
The name Dolcetto does not mean sugar, but softness. The grape variety is the Piedmontese everyday red par excellence: easy-drinking, fruity, with that characteristic slight bitterness in the final that sets it apart from all others. Neive, in the heart of the Barbaresco appellation, gives the Dolcetto its special depth: calcareous clay soil at 300 metres, temperate climate, 30 to 35-year-old vines – a root mass that ensures concentration and character. Aldo Pola and his family vinify traditionally: fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, no wood. The result is Dolcetto in its most honest form.

"A Dolcetto as it should be: flattering and drinkable." This is how Matteo Ascheri describes his Dolcetto. No more, no less and no promise that is not kept. “Augenta” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2024
Augere – to enlarge, increase. This hilltop above Treiso owes its name to the Latins because the vines here have always produced better grapes than elsewhere. At Bricco, 420 metres above Munfrina, the soil is different: hard, compact, almost stony, with a high lime content – centuries of erosion have long since carried away the sand and silt. What remains challenges the Dolcetto grape and gives it an atypical tannin structure for the variety. Giorgio Pelissero responds with equally atypical vinification: ten to twelve days of maceration instead of the usual four, then six months in 50-hectolitre oak barrels to tame the powerful tannins.

Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2024
This Dolcetto comes from the gently sloping, gravel- and limestone-rich plots around Barolo, which Sandrone has always regarded as a wine of character in its own right. Hand-picked at the end of September, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and careful ageing in neutral wood preserve the typicality of the grape variety and at the same time lend structure. A clear, bright purple colour with a violet hue in the glass. The bouquet is as inviting as it is precise: black cherry, blackberry and plum, surrounded by violet blossom, almonds and a hint of graphite. On the palate, it displays a harmonious combination of juicy fruit, finely integrated acidity and ripe, slightly grippy tannins. The medium-long finish carries mineral notes and a hint of herbal spice. A Dolcetto with substance and nobility that epitomises the philosophy of the house – clarity, balance and elegance – even in the supposedly simplest grape variety. SUPERIORE.DE

Three Dolcetto parcels in Neive and one wine: Cottà, Basarin and San Cristoforo consist of calcareous marl soils with sandy veins. The grapes are harvested selectively by hand; fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel with a maceration period of around three weeks in order to gain flavour, grip and depth. La Morra, calcareous sandy soils, north-eastern slopes – this is where the 20 to 40-year-old Dolcetto vines for Elio Altareclassic grow. Chiara Boschis is no stranger to the world of Barolo. Her wines from Castiglione Falletto – including the legendary MGAs Via Nuova, Mosconi and Cannubi – are among the finest in the entire wine-growing region. But the Dolcetto tells its own, more modest story: not a wine with ambition, but with a clear attitude. The grapes come from three of our own vineyards in Monforte d'Alba – ravera, Le Coste and Mosconi – at an altitude of around 400 metres. The soils consist of calcareous clay in pale grey and pink layers, interspersed with pebbles, calcium carbonate and iron. Typical of these older geological formations is a natural minerality that gives the Dolcetto depth and backbone, which is not always expected. Organic cultivation. Vinification exclusively in steel.

!["Priavino" Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2023]()
“Priavino” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2023
Juice and power is the headline for this incredibly dense and fleshy Dolcetto, which already announces what awaits the senses with its rich ruby-purple colour. Lots of dark, sweet cherry, plus tobacco, leather and incense pour out of the glass and then hit the palate in concentrated form, embedded in a wonderful, silky, lush texture. Lavender, violets and white pepper can be found in the long, incredibly juicy finish. Roberto Voerzio proves once again here how you can make a fantastic, great wine from the Dolcetto grape, even away from the great Barolo wines in his repertoire, by reducing yields and being uncompromising! Dolcetto: quiet & seductive
The name Dolcetto may suggest a sweet style, but first impressions are deceptive. The Piedmontese grape variety, whose name probably refers more to the low acidity than the residual sugar, produces dry, fruity red wines that are characterised by their drinkability and authenticity. It was cultivated in the hills around Dogliani as early as the 16th century, and historical documents attest to its importance in the cellars of both aristocratic and peasant households. Unlike Nebbiolo, which is known for its aristocratic austerity, Dolcetto shows a more accessible side: a wine for now, with juicy fruit, harmonious tannins and a subtle bitter almond note on the finish.
Dolcetto often smells of dark cherries, blackberries and plums, accompanied by floral nuances and a hint of graphite. It develops a medium weight on the palate, balanced by mild acidity and fine-grained tannins. Its structure makes it a serious accompaniment to food, even if it is often described as an uncomplicated "house wine" of Piedmont – an attribute that has long since ceased to do justice to its quality.
Piedmontese roots with character
The most important growing areas are in south-west Piedmont, where the grape variety has its designation of origin in seven DOC zones. Particularly noteworthy are Dolcetto d'Alba, Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba and Dolcetto di Dogliani. The latter has even enjoyed the highest Italian quality status as Dogliani DOCG since 2005. In this hilly landscape between the foothills of the Alps and the Langhe valleys, Dolcetto thrives on calcareous marl soils at altitudes of up to 600 metres. The continental climate with a pronounced day/night temperature gradient gives the wines freshness and aromatic depth.
Although Dolcetto is one of the early-ripening varieties with a comparatively short vegetation cycle, it requires care in the vineyard. It reacts sensitively to drought stress and rot and therefore places high demands on the work of the winegrower. However, anyone who pays attention to it will be rewarded with a wine full of character that is often underestimated – not least because it is overshadowed by more famous varieties such as Barbera or Nebbiolo.
One wine – many names
Dolcetto does not only appear under its own name. In Liguria, particularly in the Riviera di Ponente, it is known as Ormeasco. Other synonyms are Douce Noire, Nera Dolce and Uva del Monferrato. The latter name refers to one of its presumed regions of origin. In today's Piedmontese wine scene, a number of producers have helped Dolcetto to gain a new reputation. Among the outstanding producers are the traditional Pecchenino family in Dogliani, who produce Dolcetto with structure, depth and ageing potential, and Elio Altare, who give Dolcetto its own profile despite the Barolo renommée. G.D. Vajra also regularly bottles stylish interpretations that show that Dolcetto can be more than just an everyday wine.
A real Piedmontese at the table
Dolcetto demonstrates Italian table culture: uncomplicated and yet with depth. Its mild acidity and youthful fruit harmonise perfectly with rustic cuisine. Classic Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin with mushrooms, vitello tonnato or bagna cauda are ideal accompaniments. Dolcetto also shows its strengths with pizza with salsiccia, pasta with game ragout or medium-strong cheeses. Ideally, it should be drunk at a temperature of 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. Served slightly cooler, it remains invigoratingly fresh; too warm it quickly becomes dull. If you decant it, you can give it some air and bring out additional, exciting nuances.
Mild, but not "dolce"
Despite its name, Dolcetto is a dry wine. Rather, "dolce" refers to the mild, soft nature of the wine in comparison to more varietal wines. As Roberto Voerzio once said about his Dolcetto d'Alba "Priavino": "Dolcetto is acidic, juicy and fresh, medium-bodied and uncomplicated in the best sense of the word. A good everyday wine". He thus precisely summarises what connoisseurs love about Dolcetto: accessible, lively and charming. Dolcetto is a wine that fills the heart and the glass – without loud words, but always with a lot of personality. SUPERIORE.DE
