    • "Bric del Salto" Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2018

“Bric del Salto” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2018

Bright ruby red. Bric del Salto interprets the famous Piedmontese grape variety in a direct and classic way. Fruity bouquet combined with the typical Neive spice. On the palate it is clear, with precise fruit, the right dose of fine tannins - and above all an inspiring freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

"The well-priced Sottimano 2018 Dolcetto d’Alba Bric del Salto opens to a lean appearance with a light garnet color. This comes as a surprise, as Dolcetto tends to delivers much darker colors and richer saturation. The Sottimano house style embraces elegance, grace and fragility. These goals are achieved effortlessly here, and again, the big surprise is that the exuberant and freewheeling intensity of the Dolcetto grape can be harnessed so effectively to reveal understated aromas of wild cherry, crushed stone and balsam herb. I recommend you buy this wine by the case, not the bottle. This is a lot of fun at low cost." Robert Parker

    • "Priavino" Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2019

      “Priavino” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2019

Juice and power is the headline for this incredibly dense and fleshy Dolcetto, which already announces in rich ruby-purple what awaits the senses. Lots of dark, sweet cherry, plus tobacco, leather and incense pour from the glass and then hit the palate in concentrated form, embedded in a beautiful, silky, lush texture. Lavender, violets and white pepper can be found in the long, incredibly juicy finish. Roberto Voerzio proves once again how one can make a dreamlike, great wine out of the Dolcetto grape with yield reduction and uncompromisingness, even apart from the great Barolo of his repertoire! • "Bricco Botti" Dogliani Superiore DOCG 2016

“Bricco Botti” Dogliani Superiore DOCG 2016

Dogliani Bricco Botti is dark and powerful. Wonderfully complex aromas of dark fruit, tobacco, leather, liquorice, tar, mint and flowers. Harmoniously round and perfect in taste. A Dolcetto of the extra class! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Dogliani Superiore Bricco Botti represents one of the most profound and sophisticated expressions of this popular Piedmont grape variety. The Dogliani appellation is specifically recognized for the purity and authenticity of those dark berry flavors and the bright acidity that is associated with Dolcetto. This cool-vintage wine is sharp, focused and bright with loads of primary fruit. However, there is enough softness and meat here to soften the mouthfeel. This is textbook Dogliani, and worthy of a brasato al Barolo, although you'll be forgiven if you want to marinate the beef in a more economical red." Robert Parker

"A linear and compressed red with lots of blue-fruit and slate undertones to the firm tannins. Full body. Tight and racy. From dolcetto and always excellent." James Suckling

"The 2016 Dogliani Superiore Bricco Botti is a powerful, brooding wine. Smoke, leather, licorice, game, incense and wild black cherry add to an impression of gravitas and virile power in this potent Dogliani. The tannins could use a bit of time to soften, but there is no shortage of personality or character here - that much is certain. The 2016 takes Dolcetto into another level of expression and dimension." Vinous

    Things to know aboutDolcetto

The name Dolcetto could be freely translated as "Sweet little one". Although the grapes, like the berries, are actually quite big and the sugar content is not really higher than with other red wine grapes in Piedmont. Since Piedmont still speaks relatively old dialects, which differ considerably from region to region, Dolcetto also has a lot of synonyms in its linguistic usage. From Dozzeti, Dolchetto or Dolcino, over unpronounceable versions up to origin designations like Uva del Monferrato or Uva di Ovada. In some local wine bars it is advisable to ask twice if you want to know what you have in your glass.

Dolcetto seems to be a quite old regional and/or autochthonous grape variety. The first mention of Dolcetto dates back to 1300 A.D. All suspected relatives with other grape varieties could not be proven in DNA analyses, not even with the white grape variety Dolcetto Bianco.

Dolcetto used to be widespread, but in the last few decades it has been replaced by Barbera and Nebbiolo, although with careful care and skilful ageing it is possible to produce very fine, fruity red wines. Dolcetto is much earlier accessible, more velvety and less tannic and acidic than its more famous neighbours in the vineyard. The aromatic spectrum includes black berries, sour cherries, plums and often a hint of liquorice or bitter almond. Piedmontese people appreciate Dolcetto as a rather universal accompaniment to regional cuisine.

Under other names Dolcetto can also be found here and there in other regions of Italy, as Ormaesco in Liguria or as Nibiò in Umbria. There are also tiny quantities overseas, brought by emigrants in earlier times. The Dolcetto currently thrives on about 6,500 hectares, 20 years ago it was still over 7,000.  SUPERIORE.DE
