Mozart knew what he was doing. In the second act of Don Giovanni, his hero calls for wine – and it is the Marzemino that he desires: "Eccellente Marzemino!" It was to be his last indulgence before his just punishment. The variety, which is related to Refosco and Teroldego, has lost little of its seductive power since then. Maculan cultivates it in Fara Vicentino, on a vineyard called Cornorotto – volcanic tuff hills, mineral-rich soil. The grapes are lightly dried for a week before being placed in steel tanks – a quiet trick that brings concentration and depth without heaviness.

The result: deep ruby red, aromas of cherry, plum and violet, with a slight hint of bitter almond on the finish, as Marzemino is so fond of showing. Intense, soft and velvety – with very delicate tannins and a finish that always remains friendly. A wine that Don Giovanni would have enjoyed today. SUPERIORE.DE
